Whether they work in an exclusively equine practice or a mixed-practice setting, veterinarians attending the 2011 North American Veterinary Conference will encounter a program devoted to their specific interests, note the organizers of the event, which will take place Jan. 15-19 in Orlando, Fla. The five-day equine program includes a variety of world-class speakers and topics, with most days offering a choice between two tracks.

January 15, begins the schedule with the equine dermatology symposium, featuring boarded dermatologists Wendy Lorch, DVM, MS, PhD, and Stephen White, DVM. Lorch and White will present on a variety of topics including insect-bite hypersensitivity, and bacterial and fungal skin infections. The day wraps up with a panel discussion that will include detailed descriptions of the presentations and management of various problematic cases of skin disease.

Attendees can choose sessions from two all-day symposia on Jan. 16: equine colic or orthopedics and imaging. In the colic symposium, Sam Hurcombe, BVSc, BVMS, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, and Vanessa Cook, VetMB, MS, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVECC, will cover important aspects of colic diagnosis, treatment, and management. Orthopedic surgeons Sarah Sampson, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, headline the orthopedics track, describing a wide variety of topics involving the imaging, diagnosis, and treatment of orthopedic injuries and conditions.

The first of two symposia on Jan. 17 will be devoted to lameness. Michael Ross, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, and Earl Gaughan, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, will discuss sports-related lameness and recent advancements in the basic lameness examination. In the second track, a panel of four veterinarians will address a variety of topics relating to equine wounds. Henry Jann, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS; Jeff Watkins, DVM, MS, Dipl.
