Dead Donkeys, Horses Found; Texas Rancher Faces Charges

A Texas man remains in jail following his arrest on animal cruelty charges for allegedly maltreating donkeys and horses on his property.
Acting on a complaint on Sunday, Fannin County Sherriff's Office and Habitat for Horses investigators discovered the carcasses of at least 22 Miniature Donkeys and three horses on a Leonard, Texas, ranch. Nine allegedly malnourished Miniature Donkeys and seven horses were also found on the property.
The surviving horses were removed from the ranch. A pregnant mare was later euthanized. The remaining animals are receiving rehabilitative care, said Habitat for Horses spokesperson Valerie Kennedy.
Gilbert Lee Epperson, the animals' owner, is charged with one count of class A misdemeanor cruelty to animals carrying penalties including fines up to $4,000, up to one year in jail or both, said Fannin County spokesman Sgt. James Woods. Additional charges could follow
