Barrel Horse Theft Investigations Continue

Charges connected to the alleged theft and abuse of a barrel horse remain pending until prosecutors can verify facts surrounding the case.

The horse was competing in the Fort Pierre Rodeo when it was taken from the Stanley County Fair Grounds on July 5. Sheriff's deputies later recovered the horse in a corral elsewhere in Fort Pierre.

State's Attorney Thomas P. Maher said no charges will be filed until his follow-up investigation is complete.

"We're still sorting out different people's version of the story from different locations," Maher said. "Right now, I'm not convinced a crime took place."
