The American Horse Council (AHC) board of trustees is considering a proposal that would place under the organization’s umbrella a coalition working on the issue of unwanted horses.
At the AHC issues forum in April 2005, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) held an “Unwanted Horse Summit” to bring industry representatives together to address the issue. Subsequent meetings were held, and in November 2005 a consensus was reached to develop a memorandum of understanding for consideration by the AHC.
The coalition decided the focus should be on education, not advocacy. The issue has been colored by an industry debate over horse slaughter.
“We’re not going to go from 50,000 unwanted horses to zero unwanted horses,” said Remi Bellocq, executive director of the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HPBA). “We need to provide information in the different regions of the country on the resources that are available
