"On the Slide" Wins AHSA Photo Award

"On the Slide," a photograph published in the October 1999issue of The Horse magazine, taken by freelance equestrian photographer Charles Mann, was chosen as the best in equine sports by the American Horse Shows Association (ASHA), as part of the Seventh Annual AHSA Media Awards announced on Thursday, January 6. Established in 1993, the AHSA Media Awards formally salute journalists and media outlets that promote interest in equestrian sports.

"On the Slide" captures a champion reining horse and rider sliding to astopped position in a cloud of dust. The photograph is so crisp you canactually see the treads on the cowboy rider's boots. Mann is a frequent photographic contributor to The Horse. "Charles Mann is one of the best equine photographers in the country, so I'm not surprised that he won yet another award for his work," said Kimberly S. Graetz, Editor of The Horse. "We are proud to have his photography grace the covers and pages of The Horse, whether it's an award-winning action shot, a picture taken from a very technical angle, or something that warms the heart."

For the second consecutive year, The Horse has been the publisher of thephotograph selected by the AHSA as best in the nation. The Horse is anall-breed publication that focuses on health, management, and welfare issues of equines and is published by The Blood-Horse Publications,Lexington, Kentucky. The American Horse Shows Association is the regulatory body for the Olympic and World Championship sports of combined driving, dressage, endurance,eventing, show jumping, and vaulting, as well as 19 other breeds and disciplines of equestrian competition. The AHSA has over 70,000 members andrecognizes more than 2,600 competitions nationwide each year.
