Thoroughbred stallion Storm Boot, who sired 46 stakes winners at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm near Lexington, Ky., was euthanatized May 10 at Hagyard Equine Medical Center. A member of Storm Cat’s first crop, 18-year-old Storm Boot suffered from chronic degenerative tendinitis and laminitis.

One of Storm Cat’s leading sons by stakes winners and progeny earnings ($26.8 million), Storm Boot stood his entire career at Crestwood and started for a fee of $1,000. He did so well with his first crop of runners that his fee was upped to $6,000 the following year. It eventually reached $15,000.

“He was Storm Cat’s first successful son at stud,”said Robert Keck of Crestwood.

Storm Boot proved a solid stallion, siring 77% starters and 61% winners from foals. His two leading runners were the multiple graded stakes-winning fillies Bourbon Belle and Hurricane Bertie. Bourbon Belle, who won 13 added-money races, reached millionaire status, and Hurricane Bertie, a grade II winner, earned $940,041. Storm Boot also sired grade II winners Night Patrol and Smooth Jazz, plus grade III winners American Spirit, Icanseetherain, Primal Storm, and Tiger. Last year, he was represented by 10 stakes winners
