Kentucky Reports Third Equine WNV Case of 2014

The Kentucky State Veterinarian's office has announced that a Marshall County horse has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV), the third confirmed case in the commonwealth this year.
In a statement Kentucky Equine Programs manager E.S. "Rusty" Ford relayed that the unvaccinated 26-year-old grade gelding's attending veterinarian described the animal as febrile (having a fever), lethargic, and inappetent on Sept. 22. Over the next 36 hours, the horse developed facial muscle fasciculation (twitching) and lower lip paresis, Ford's statement said. After another 12 hours, the horse became recumbent (unable to rise) and was euthanized on Sept. 26.
The state veterinarian's office received the positive test results late on Sept. 30.
In September, an unvaccinated 5-year-old horse from Calloway County and a presumably unvaccinated, Ford said, 3-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse mare from Marion County were euthanized after contracting WNV
