Lameness, Neurology Highlight AAEP Resort Symposium

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) will host its 12th annual Resort Symposium Jan. 24-26, 2010, at the Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The focus of this year's Resort Symposium, sponsored by Bayer Animal Health, is equine performance evaluation, lameness, and neurological disease.

AAEP immediate past president Harry Werner, VMD, said this is a symposium not to be missed and highly recommended it to fellow practitioners.

Following is the program:

Sunday, January 24
12:30-1:30 p.m. Equine Performance Evaluation, by John S. Mitchell, DVM, who will discuss his systematic approach to evaluating horses presented for poor performance and emphasize the importance of good owner-trainer-veterinarian communication during performance evaluations.

1:30-3:00 p.m. Evaluating the Lame Horse, by Bill Moyer, DVM, who will provide attendees with a history of lameness in various types of sport horses. He will also cover physical evaluations of the horse in motion for each type of sport horse.

3:00-5:00 p.m. Use of Diagnostic Anesthesia in the Lameness Evaluation, by G. Kent Carter, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, who for more than 25 years has examined cases of referral lameness and used diagnostic analgesia on a daily basis. He has found diagnostic analgesia/anesthesia to be invaluable in determining the location of the pain that is causing lameness. He will present his findings and address numerous studies that have improved the practitioner's understanding of areas affected by nerve and joint anesthesia.

Monday, January 25
7:00 a.m.-Noon Interactive Lameness Cases in Western Performance Horses, by David D. Frisbie, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, who will lead an interactive presentation on lameness in Quarter Horses. His case presentations will include a video of lameness before and during the lameness examination, treatment strategies, and, in some cases, the outcome of the case. Attendees will have an electronic response device to respond to the case and find out how fellow practitioners voted in on the management of each case.

Tuesday, January 26
7:00 a.m.-Noon Understanding Neurologic Disease: Art and Science of Neurologic Examination with Illustrative Video Case Examples, by Robert J. MacKay, BVSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, who will present cases of neurologic examinations through illustrative videos. Case presentations include examinations of the spinal cord, forebrains, brain stem, and cranial nerves as well as peripheral nerve and idiopathic conditions.
