Civilian riders can earn their stripes, so to speak, by attending a presentation November 19 by the Lexington Mounted Police. The free public program offered by Alltech, sponsor of the FEI World Equestrian Games 2010, is entitled "Sensory Training: How to Bombproof Your Horse."

Sgt. Ellen Sam and other training officers from the Lexington Mounted Police will show videos and address useful techniques to control and refocus horses when they encounter noise, crowds, traffic, and other fear-inducing situations. The training methods are universally applicable to any type of horse and any style of riding. Certain techniques that will be explained are particularly beneficial for those who ride in public areas or in large groups (such as group trail rides), as well as for competitors who participate in large horse shows or other events where horses are exposed to unusual stimuli.

Information will be provided on mounted sensory training clinics for civilians conducted by the Lexington Mounted Police. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Part of Alltech's monthly Equine News & Brews series, the event will be held at Alltech's Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company at 401 Cross St. in downtown Lexington. The evening will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7:00. There is no charge but attendees must preregister by e-mailing: EquineNewsandBrews@alltech.com
