Cornell Equine Hospital Quarantined with Confirmed EHV-1

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s equine hospital is under a voluntary quarantine after confirming a case of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1). The quarantine began March 20 and will continue indefinitely.

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s equine hospital is under a voluntary quarantine after confirming a case of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1). The quarantine began March 20 and will continue indefinitely.

"(An affected) foal came in at 2:00 a.m. on March 20, but we didn’t get culture results until March 29," said Stephanie Specchio, director of communications at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

"This is not being considered an outbreak," she continued. "We just got the fourth day’s results of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing on all of the horses in the hospital and every one has been negative."

"Horses that were discharged from the Cornell Equine Hospital prior to March 18 were not exposed to known cases in our hospital," the hospital said on its website. "We are presently contacting horse owners whose horses could possibly have been exposed to known equine herpesvirus. We have contacted all referring veterinarians who referred horses to our facility during this time period
