It is absolutley imperative to have a nurse mare or older companion mare to help socialize.

1/14/2013 5:13:18 PM

Though, it helps to have another horse around who can assist with socialization skills.

1/13/2013 4:13:39 PM

1/10/2013 10:21:18 PM

Have raised many orphans using nurse mares -- can't tell them from other foals.

1/10/2013 10:20:21 PM

They become like a child and a little can become more pushy than a non-orphan foal.

1/10/2013 2:56:32 PM

Tbred gelding, a one person horse now, needs clear boundaries and horse social contact. A good horse

1/10/2013 12:12:44 PM

tough very spoiled

1/10/2013 10:59:02 AM

The foal was a colt, it was heart breaking, rewarding, and a lot of worry. He's a blessing now.

1/10/2013 9:25:04 AM

Any artificially weaned foal should be considered "orphaned"

1/10/2013 8:21:38 AM

1/9/2013 8:40:47 PM

Now a 5 year old and doing great!

1/9/2013 8:27:46 PM

But I own one. 15 years old and when you give her a treat, she sucks her tongue for 10 minutes.

1/9/2013 7:52:02 PM

it very hard as the mare teaches alot that humans can't

1/9/2013 7:16:25 PM

I was lucky. My vet's tech had a mare who that adopted my foal.

1/9/2013 6:50:01 PM

1/9/2013 5:53:55 PM

with another mare with foal. Smear mare´s dung on the orphan and she will accept the foal. I

1/9/2013 5:32:18 PM

This can be a nightmare. If you treat the foal like its mother would, it can work out fantastically

1/9/2013 4:21:54 PM

would love to

1/9/2013 2:55:33 PM

No, and I pray I dont have too.

1/9/2013 1:25:30 PM

From 1mo old I fed & my 30yo retired broodmare taught him to be a horse, he turned out awesome!

1/9/2013 1:05:47 PM

A loss beyond words when my mare died leaving a 9 day old foal, but the little filly & I did fine!

1/9/2013 9:48:05 AM

I was fortunate to have a "retired" broodmare who was willing to become a nursemare.

1/9/2013 9:39:49 AM

The mare tried to kill 'Trouble' . Raised him on milk replacer and a dairy goat.

1/9/2013 8:53:17 AM

nurse foal baby

1/9/2013 8:45:42 AM

was very lucky the mares sister had a foal and finished up suckling both with the help of good creep

1/9/2013 8:29:31 AM

Yes, she was 6 weeks old when we lost her mother. Got good advice and she is not spoiled.

1/9/2013 8:15:27 AM

We had a mare die when her foal was a month old. Filly ended up fine.

1/9/2013 7:59:06 AM

premature foal/ initially ill

1/9/2013 7:46:13 AM

1/9/2013 7:01:59 AM

1/9/2013 12:34:32 AM

We hope we never have to do it again.

1/8/2013 10:25:05 PM

My mare was struck by lightning when her colt was only three months old.

1/8/2013 10:01:53 PM

Have raised 10 through a rescue that does a lot of them

1/8/2013 9:34:47 PM

1/8/2013 9:18:13 PM

Pure hell, died after 4 mo. salmonilla

1/8/2013 9:16:46 PM

Three times and it gets easier with each one.

1/8/2013 8:38:10 PM

I haven't, but my horse is the offspring of my friend's orphan

1/8/2013 8:31:20 PM

lots of time and work

1/8/2013 8:07:42 PM

My Aunt's horse was an orphan and does have his bad habits.

1/8/2013 8:01:19 PM

I was able to help the foal be accepted by the mare

1/8/2013 7:53:00 PM

shye turned out very well.

1/8/2013 7:39:08 PM

Goodness no. I don't yet know enough to nurture a foal.

1/8/2013 7:38:37 PM

We did find a surrogate mare to take the foal after the first 48 hours.

1/8/2013 6:48:32 PM

We tried but lost the filly at less than a week old.

1/8/2013 6:16:07 PM

We could write a how-to book about raising a thoroughbred foal to age 12 and how different they are.

1/8/2013 6:15:02 PM

I was lucky, I had a mare that adopted the foal and socialized him

1/8/2013 6:03:23 PM

My clydesdale mare was orphaned at 8 weeks of age.

1/8/2013 5:52:35 PM

Have been lucky enough not to experience that!

1/8/2013 5:51:46 PM

She was a half mini half welsh and she lived in our house for the first 2 months

1/8/2013 5:05:21 PM

I've raised several. Avoid a bottle or wean early to avoid abnormal association as "human is mother"

1/8/2013 12:59:18 PM

It was a challenging but rewarding endeavor.

1/8/2013 10:14:33 AM

The foals mother was stuck by lightening and another mare that had a baby and let her nurse also.

1/8/2013 7:15:43 AM

only haflingers - if they're orphan, then yes. I live in Denmark, and here they're not rare seen :-)
