BEVA Congress to Feature Sessions for Equine Nurses

The British Equine Veterinary Association’s (BEVA) 2015 Congress, taking place Sept. 9-12 at the Liverpool Arena Convention Centre, in England, will host a veterinary nursing day, featuring lectures aimed specifically at the profession and presented by a combination of veterinarians and vet nurses.

This year, on Sept. 12, there will be a day of practical lectures on aspects of caring for the hospitalized horse. In the morning session Joanna Suthers, BVM&S, MPhil, CertES(Soft Tissue), Dipl. ECVS, MRCVS, from B&W Equine Hospital, in southwest England, will discuss how to appraise a paper. Dawn McHugh, BA, Dipl. AVN, EVN, VN, head nurse at Newmarket Equine Hospital, in England, will take a look at current evidence-based practice in theater (or surgery suite) nursing. Louise Southwood, BVSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVECC, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, and Katherine King, REVN, from Liphook Equine Hospital, in England, will cover nurse and intern theater essentials in abdominal surgery and arthroscopic surgery, respectively. Also during the morning, lecturers will present sessions on inpatient care will cover management of the recumbent horse (Nicola Pusterla, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, a professor at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine), care of acute and chronic starvation cases (Nicky Jarvis, BVetMed, Cert. AVP (equine medicine), MRCVS, from Redwings Horse Sanctuary, in the U.K.), dystocia and care of the post-parturient mare (Bonny Millar, CVT, RVN, REVN, from Rossdales Equine Hospital, in Suffolk, England), and atypical myopathy—masquerading as colic for years or an emerging disease (Victoria South, MA, Vet MB, CertAVP(EM), Dipl. ECEIM, MRCVS, from Liphook Equine Hospital).

The afternoon session will start with a down-to-earth appraisal of the hospitalized horse and their owners. Gemma Pearson, BVMS, MRCVS, from Dick Vet Equine Hospital, in Edinburgh, Scotland, will discuss dealing with the difficult and dangerous horse. Clare Scantlebury, BSc, BVSc, PhD, MRCVS, from University of Liverpool will look at horse owner approaches to equine health and the role of veterinary advice. Angela Garner from Environmental Animal Sanctuary & Education will discuss euthanasia and dealing with grieving horse owners, and David Green, BVSc, CertEP, MRCVS, from Veterinary Defence Society Ltd will provide some pointers on dealing with difficult clients.

The closing session will explore hospital techniques, covering the investigation of wounds (Padraig Kelly, MVB, MRCVS, from the University of Liverpool); intravenous catheter placement, care, and complications (Sarah Ross, BVSc, MRCVS, from the University of Bristol); abdominal ultrasonography and getting the best images (Rachel Conwell, BVetMed, CertEM(IntMed), Dipl. ECEIM, MRCVS, from Equimed Referrals Ltd. In West Yorkshire, England); and radiography: reaching the parts other nurses can’t reach (Katherine King)
