New Jersey animal health officials have announced that three horses in that state have died after contracting Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), the first equine cases of 2014.

A 4-year-old mare from Gloucester County began showing neurologic signs of EEE on Aug. 10 and was euthanized on Sept. 10. A 2-year-old Ocean County mare, who was vaccinated against EEE in the spring, began showing neurologic signs on Sept. 11 and died on Sept. 14. And an unvaccinated 6-year-old Burlington County gelding began showing signs of illness on Sept. 21 and was euthanized that day.

“Horse owners need to be vigilant in vaccinating their animals against diseases spread by mosquitoes,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher. “Vaccinated animals are much less likely to contract deadly diseases such as EEE and West Nile virus (WNV).”

In 2013, New Jersey had two cases of equine EEE in August; no equine WNV cases were reported last year
