One horse is dead and two others are recovering from injuries after a tornado touched down on the Auburn University campus earlier this week.

Jennifer Taintor, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, associate professor of Equine Medicine at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, said that on Nov. 16, 45 horses belonging to Auburn’s JTV Large Animal Teaching Hospital teaching herd were located in 10 paddocks on the school’s Auburn, Ala., campus when tornado-force winds swept through, damaging fences and demolishing shelters in seven of those paddocks.

During the storm one horse sustained a serious forelimb injury and was humanely euthanized, Taintor said. Two other animals sustained minor injuries.

"One had a laceration to its back that was closed with a couple of (surgical) staples, and another sustained a very minor limb injury that is being treated topically," Taintor said
