Law enforcement authorities in South Carolina are seeking those responsible for the shooting death of a horse in Anderson County late last month.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Chad McBride said that on Oct. 27, the horse’s caretaker discovered the animal dead in its pasture. The horse had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

McBride said investigators believe a rifle was used to shoot the animal, however he does not believe the death resulted from a hunter’s stray shot. "No experienced hunter is going to mistake a 1500 pound horse for a 100 pound deer," he said.

While the investigation into the incident continues, McBride said a cash reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the shooting. Anyone with information about the incident should call CrimeStoppers at 888/CRIMESC
