Virikis Sis, the registered Arabian racing mare discovered wandering in a field in rural Hialeah, Fla., earlier this month was euthanized on Friday after being diagnosed with a shredded tendon, said Jeannette Jordan, president of the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the agency in charge of the horse's care.

Law enforcement authorities discovered Virikis Sis, and three other stray, allegedly malnourished horses on June 8. All were placed with the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for rehabilitative care. Virikis Sis was also under treatment for hoof abscesses and a deep rear leg wound.

Veterinarians later attributed the leg wound to a shredded tendon.

Virikis Sis was registered to Darley Stud Management in 1996. Deemed too small to race, Darley managers gave the horse to a breeding farm operator. In 2009, the farm's owner gave the mare to a man described as a landscaper from Miami
