After arriving in Haiti Thursday evening, a team of veterinarians has begun to assess animal needs and is offering hands-on assistance to animals affected by the earthquake. The group represents Humane Society International, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

"Our team is committed to assisting the animals of this disaster-stricken nation in any way possible," said Kelly O'Meara, director of HSI's companion animals division. "As our team continues its work in Haiti we are already planning for a second wave of veterinarians and disaster responders to make their way to the affected area."

Since arriving in Haiti the response team has provided food for many animals wandering the streets, went to a local zoo to check on the welfare of the animals there, and is now visiting an agricultural area to assess the needs of farm animals in the region
