Anne Schumate Williams, who operated a horse rescue in Somerset, Virginia, has been found guilty of multiple animal cruelty counts in connection with a high-profile case in Orange County.

In 2015, Orange County Sheriff’s Office personnel discovered a herd of 89 allegedly emaciated horses at Williams’ Peaceable Farm, along with the remains of seven other horses. Investigators also found two donkeys and several cats and dogs. Williams (also known as Anne Goland) surrendered 71 horses, along with the dogs and several cats. She retained possession of 18 horses, the two donkeys, a bull, and the remaining cats.

Veterinarians subsequently assessed the horses and euthanized five due to their poor condition. They determined that another 10 horses were in need of immediate veterinary care, and authorities seized those animals after Williams declined to surrender them. All seized and surrendered horses were placed in rehabilitative care.

Williams was subsequently charged with 27 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty
