Police in Boaz, Alabama, are investigating the death of a Miniature Horse found in a pond in Marshall County.

Boaz Police Department Deputy Chief Josh Gaskin said his department responded to a call from an owner reporting that a farm worker had found his Miniature Horse in a pond on the owner’s property. Gaskin said the caller reported that the horse had not been seen since April 28. Further, the caller said when the animal was found in the pond on April 30, the horse appeared to have been shot and skinned, Gaskin said.

Gaskin said investigators are not sure how or when the animal died: “We’re not sure it was shot, and we’re not sure that the hose was in the pond longer that April 30 or if its hair just fell off. We just don’t know. We’re never had a case like this.”

Investigators hope a necropsy performed at Auburn University will reveal the exact cause of the horse’s death, Gaskin said. Meanwhile, the case remains under investigation
