Horses Rescued From Texas Flood Waters

A half-dozen horses were rescued from rising waters that plagued the city of Houston and smaller Texas towns near the Brazos River. The flooding was the second incident in as many months to force humans and horses from their homes.

In April, heavy rain fell and caused flash flooding in Harris County and Houston. Additional rain caused evacuations throughout the area. All told, 20 inches of rain fell leaving five people dead and more than 100 horses in need of rescue.

On May 26, another weather system resulted in a 21-inch rainfall and severe flooding in northwest Houston. Flood waters rose so quickly that some horses, cattle, and other animals were trapped, said Barbara Downen, animal cruelty investigator for the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

“Last week we rescued six horses that were caught in the flood,” Downen said. “Their owners were there and they did have some place for them to go
