Practical Management of Strangles Outbreaks in Horses

Strangles outbreaks can be devastating to equine businesses, but the damage can be minimized or prevented through practical control plans.

Josh Slater, BVSc, BVM&S, PhD, Dipl. ECEIM, MRCVS, of the University of London’s Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, discussed managing and preventing strangles in horses at the Pan Pacific Veterinary Conference, which took place May 24-29 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The conference was a collaboration between the Australian Veterinary Association and the New Zealand Veterinary Association.

Slater said putting together a plan in the face of an outbreak is the worst time to do it.

“Having a plan and sticking to it makes everyone’s lives easier when there’s a problem,” he said. “Practical biosecurity measures are within the reach of all yards and even small changes to yard management can make a big difference to disease risk
