Injured TLAER Horse on the Mend

Torque sustained no neurologic deficits as a result of the injury and continues to respond well to treatment.

A horse injured while performing a large animal emergency rescue demonstration is on the mend according to Rebecca Gimenez, PhD, primary instructor and president of Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Inc. (TLAER).

On July 6 "Torque" was performing an A-frame vertical lift operation demonstration for 75 students at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College, located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, when he panicked and became entangled in equipment used in the exercise. As a result, the horse sustained a non-life-threatening head injury. Torque was treated at the scene, then transported to the Atlantic Veterinary College hospital’s intensive care unit, where he remains under care.

On July 14 Gimenez said that veterinary reports indicate Torque sustained no neurologic deficits as a result of the injury and that he continues to respond well to treatment including minor surgery to remove a piece of bone located within the wound.

"The neurologist said that if you didn’t see the bandage on his head (to protect the healing wound) that you would not know (Torque) ever had any injury," Gimenez said. "The only change is that he is now even more rude about getting treats and snuggles
