Virginia law enforcement authorities have removed more than 40 allegedly maltreated horses from an equine rescue farm in King William County. Among the seized animals were several horses surrendered to the rescue from the Peaceable Farm rescue and breeding farm last year.

In October 2015, the Orange County, Virginia, Sheriff’s Office began investigating conditions at Peaceable Farm, where authorities discovered a herd of 89 allegedly emaciated horses, along with the remains of seven other horses. Investigators also found two donkeys and other animals. The farm’s owner Anne Goland (also known as Anne Schumate Williams) surrendered 71 horses. Another 10 horses were later determined to be in need of immediate veterinary care and authorities seized them after Williams declined to surrender the animals.

All of the seized or surrendered horses were placed in rehabilitative care at several horse rescue organizations. Eleven of the horses were placed at the New Beginnings Horse Rescue in Aylett, Virginia.

In a written statement, King William County Sheriff J.S. Walton said county animal control personnel seized 42 horses from New Beginnings Horse Rescue on June 8 after investigating several complaints that the animals were unhealthy and lacked access to food and water
