Thoroughbred mare Rachel Alexandra, 2009 Horse of the Year, and her recently foaled colt are reportedly doing well after being admitted to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, in Lexington, Ky., earlier this week. According to a statement on Stonestreet Farm's website, the mare and foal were taken to the hospital "as a precautionary measure after her delivery for pain management related to the birth."
Rachel Alexandra and foal are being treated by Bonnie Barr, VMD, Dipl. ACVIM, an associate at Rood & Riddle.
"Rachel has proven to be an extraordinary mother and taking to her feisty colt right away," said owner Barbara Banke in the Stonestreet Farm statement. "I’m a Rachel-chondriac. We are taking every precaution to ensure that Rachel and her colt are healthy and happy."
Barring complications, the mare and foal are expected to return home in the next few days, the statement said.
