EPM and Pregnancy
Q. I know there are many treatments available for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), but are there any that are safe for use in pregnant mares? Would sulfadiazine/pyrimethamine (Rebalance) be a safer option over either of these?
Vaccinating Horses With EPM
Q. What is your opinion on giving half-doses of routine vaccinations to horses with EPM? I've read that a half-dose of vaccine in an adult horse is worthless. My horse has already received half-doses of everything. What can I do to protect him?
Lame or EPM?
Q. About a year and a half ago, my horse was diagnosed with EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis), which he was treated for, and I haven't seen any signs since. Now he's having hock issues. My veterinarian injected him with pure acid (he didn't use steroids in fear of an EPM relapse). There was excess discolored fluid in all of the joints, and one was very bloody. Because they were so bad, my
