8/25/2014 11:50:50 PM

The price of the service is significant ....do you tip your dentist...doctor...or veterinarian?

8/25/2014 10:35:42 PM

He charges enough already

8/25/2014 10:05:37 PM

It has never occurred to me to tip and has never been mentioned by any in my horse community

8/25/2014 9:37:16 PM

It's a service & I always tip on services.

8/25/2014 9:32:34 PM

I buy him beer occasionally. Does that count?

8/25/2014 9:09:29 PM

For trimming it costs $35 per horse and he's done in a half hour.

8/25/2014 8:55:53 PM

why would you if you dont think he charges you enough tell him but dont embarasshim with a tip

8/25/2014 8:52:38 PM

It never occurred to me to tip the farrier.

8/25/2014 8:02:46 PM

I also will tip the farrier if he has to come out just to replace a shoe, etc.

8/25/2014 7:56:09 PM

I am a farrier, 41 years, only one client that tips me!

8/25/2014 7:45:04 PM

I tipped my farrier $10 for two horses for being so patient and kind to my horses when difficult

8/25/2014 7:40:46 PM

There rates are extremely high , 150 an hour is pretty good.

8/25/2014 7:35:52 PM

Why tip? You are paying for the farrier service as is.

8/25/2014 7:13:03 PM

No. My farrier charges $40 to trim my horse's hoofs and does two horses in about 20 minutes.

8/25/2014 6:47:27 PM

Never heard of this

8/25/2014 6:33:05 PM

I write a $400.00 check for 2 horses every 4 weeks. That is sufficient.

8/25/2014 6:14:50 PM

My farrier would be offended at the thought.

8/25/2014 6:12:03 PM

I used to, but since they started charging a trip charge I don't

8/25/2014 6:06:59 PM

I offer enough extra money to cover gas expense, since my farrier is very inexpensive!

8/25/2014 5:39:19 PM

Didn't think about it, until now!

8/25/2014 5:35:25 PM

I've never thought of tipping my farrier since I feel he charges an adequate fee already .

8/25/2014 5:21:53 PM

Tipping is a difficult thing to deal with. Most farriers are independent, therefore no tipping.

8/25/2014 5:16:48 PM

My farriers r self employed so I didn't think tipping was appropriate except holidays

8/25/2014 5:13:38 PM

I never heard of anyone tipping the farrier except at the holidays

8/25/2014 5:02:52 PM

While I appreciate what they do its their job and they aren't exactly cheap

8/25/2014 4:56:19 PM

I also don't tip the vet, dentist etc but will tip the hay delivery kids if the job is done right

8/25/2014 4:52:07 PM

I tip during the holidays and if my horses have made the farrier's job harder.

8/25/2014 4:35:31 PM

But he gets a Christmas gift equal to the bill for one visit for my four horses

8/25/2014 4:33:39 PM

He has asked that I NOT tip him; as this is his way of providing a service for his fee!

8/25/2014 4:32:23 PM

Our farriers are equine podiatrists who travel 200 miles one way to come to our farm. Yes, a tip!

8/25/2014 4:31:14 PM

I've never even considered it!

8/25/2014 4:03:23 PM

I like to stay on the good side of him in case I need him in a hurry.

8/25/2014 3:24:03 PM

Prices here are so high that I can barely afford them as it is My farrier sets his rates

8/25/2014 2:06:15 PM

Our farrier come to trim our three horses every six weeks during the trail riding seasons.

8/25/2014 11:11:55 AM

My farrier is paid sufficiently and no one tips in this area.

8/25/2014 10:34:22 AM

To tip is fine. No foot. No horse.

8/25/2014 9:48:21 AM

I don't tip but I do bake for him. He gets lots of goodies.

8/25/2014 9:35:56 AM

i live in holland

8/25/2014 8:37:03 AM

Tipping is for employees. Not owners of a business. You don't tip your instructor!

8/25/2014 1:48:10 AM

He charges enough.

8/25/2014 12:14:57 AM

i do give him gifts of food or gift cards to local restaurants during the year & Christmas

8/24/2014 3:26:51 PM

my horses reasonable to work with...at times, i have given my farrier something at Christmas

I do give money or movie gift card (he and wife love going to the movies) during the holidays.

8/24/2014 1:05:33 PM

Does fresh produce from my garden count?

8/24/2014 11:07:56 AM

when they do extra without charge -I always do !

8/24/2014 8:19:42 AM

I give him a gift at Christmas time.

8/23/2014 9:55:41 PM

My farrier trims my four horses. I tip him 25% because he is always on time and does great work.

8/23/2014 4:41:09 PM

My farrier is dependable and kind to my horses

8/23/2014 3:45:28 PM

He is costly enough

8/23/2014 10:39:10 AM

I give a holiday gift, but this is his job that is well paid and not dependent on tips.

8/23/2014 8:08:02 AM

He runs his own business and his prices are high. I don't tip the vet or the A/C repairman either!

8/23/2014 3:27:58 AM

I give him a Christmas bonus. Don't be ridiculous, he is his own business and sets his prices.

8/23/2014 12:37:16 AM

My farrier goes out of his way and is very caring to my horses so I give him more than he has asked

8/22/2014 11:49:52 PM

No, her charges include any tip I might give her.

8/22/2014 11:21:28 PM

At $200 plus every 5 weeks I can not afford to tip him/her

8/22/2014 8:47:48 PM

Like my vet, my farrier is a highly trained professional - and who tipe the vet?

8/22/2014 5:59:18 PM

If your farrier needs a tip, give him a raise. Tipping is getting out of hand.

8/22/2014 5:53:04 PM

My farrier is a professional.

8/22/2014 5:50:50 PM

It's a tough job, no matter what cost, and my farriers speed, patience and experience are worth a ti

8/22/2014 5:46:09 PM

I used to tip my farrier, but then she raised her rates, which more than covered the tip!

8/22/2014 4:16:52 PM

My horses are well behaved and I pay a lot of money. We are on a six week schedule.

8/22/2014 3:58:17 PM

I tip my farrier when he makes a special trip out to reset a lost shoe. I don't tip busines owners

8/22/2014 3:24:07 PM

My horses behave and my farrier is never on time - although an awesome farrier.

8/22/2014 3:21:52 PM

He does not expect tips or gifts. Have used him since he was a pup, when he went to customers places

8/22/2014 3:21:05 PM

gift @ xmas

8/22/2014 2:01:26 PM

I pay on the spot and give him a very nice holiday gift every year.

8/22/2014 1:22:58 PM

I pay him, but never knew I was supposed to tip him. How embarrassing.

8/22/2014 12:02:33 PM

We pay enough and they make good money!

8/22/2014 11:45:51 AM

Don't tip, but horse is a champ at trimming as well.

8/22/2014 11:43:41 AM

Totally against tipping. If the farrier expects a tip it should be included in the price.

8/22/2014 10:54:48 AM

I think my farrier would be embarrased if I wanted to tip him. At Christmas I do give him $$ .

8/22/2014 10:02:25 AM

You mean people do?

8/22/2014 9:43:05 AM

I think the $80 price every month is tip enough!

8/22/2014 9:36:10 AM

Never heard of tipping a farrier, & a LOT of horses in my area; maybe it's a regional thing?

8/22/2014 7:28:14 AM

I do my own

8/22/2014 6:44:09 AM

except at Xmas time

8/22/2014 1:49:54 AM

I do not, as I feed him lunch and we have a barn full, but several of my boarders do.

8/22/2014 12:13:39 AM

I tip with fresh eggs & baked goods. He does a great job every time & I'm thankful.

8/21/2014 11:40:06 PM

At $110 per horse, every six weeks, that's a lot.

8/21/2014 11:18:12 PM

he is paid fairly

8/21/2014 11:12:55 PM

Middle of nowhere, bad roads. At least helps pay for gas.

8/21/2014 11:07:58 PM

I would tip only if he did something out of the ordinary for my horse.

8/21/2014 10:05:54 PM

He moved 40 mi out of hisarea but still fits my 1 horse n2 his sched. I tip handsomely every time

8/21/2014 9:43:53 PM

I pay him enough to do his job. It's more than what my other farrier charged me for the same quality

8/21/2014 9:13:31 PM

occasionally I may give him a gift, cookies or his favorite pie.

8/21/2014 8:33:53 PM

My farrier does not accept tips.

8/21/2014 8:23:37 PM

or if he has to make a special trip for a lost shoe, etc

8/21/2014 7:14:55 PM

Also if he has to make a special trip for any reason.

8/21/2014 5:17:19 PM

40+ years owning horses and never heard of such a thing!

8/21/2014 4:41:50 PM

Farrier gives us the bill & we pay what is on the bill.

8/21/2014 4:41:08 PM

I pay what she charges. Why would I tip on top of that?

8/21/2014 4:27:36 PM

I've never heard of or seen anyone tip a farrier!

8/21/2014 4:10:43 PM

Extra tip for Christmas. He has to travel an hour to do 2 horses and I want him to come back.

8/21/2014 4:06:32 PM

I may if I ever have special circumstances.

8/21/2014 3:21:39 PM

I pay him enough to come, he lives right nearby.

8/21/2014 2:00:31 PM

it never occured to me

8/21/2014 1:01:08 PM

I never even thought of tipping them! Their fee is their payment??!

8/21/2014 12:19:09 PM

Trained farriers are scarce in my area. Mine works hard to keep up continuing education

8/21/2014 11:53:39 AM

with 10 to 20% tip

8/21/2014 11:31:59 AM

My farrier already charges way too much money, there is no way i would tip him.

8/21/2014 11:16:53 AM

he's already expensive!

8/21/2014 10:53:08 AM

I would expect that my Farrier's rates are appropriate, therefore, a tip is not necessary.

8/21/2014 10:30:22 AM

I do give him wine & chocolates for Christmas!

8/21/2014 9:51:16 AM

I never really thought of tipping the farrier.

8/21/2014 9:16:10 AM

my hoof trimmer gets paid very well for her services, in addition to the trip charge.

8/21/2014 9:08:10 AM

usually. But there are occasions other than those mentioned above when I do.

8/21/2014 8:37:21 AM

My farrier is very reasonable and has rarely raised his fees. I tip to help with the high gas costs

8/21/2014 7:40:37 AM

But I give him a present at Christmas.

8/21/2014 4:05:27 AM

$5 each horse. plus drinks and snacks.

8/20/2014 11:13:23 PM

Wow. Really? I didn't even know that was a thing...

8/20/2014 10:34:58 PM

He gets paid very well already plus a trip fee. My horses are well. Behaved. Why tip someone who own

8/20/2014 5:09:54 PM

Yes, each time, plus extra if horse is naughty..

8/20/2014 5:08:09 PM

I have had the same farrier for over 30 yrs and never tipped him but I always pay before he leaves

8/20/2014 4:47:36 PM

Only at Christmas

8/20/2014 4:44:18 PM

My farrier drives 12 miles on an awful dirt road to reach me-a little extra $ is just to say thanks.

8/20/2014 4:22:34 PM

You normally don't tip the owner anywhere (ie. Hairdresser)

8/20/2014 4:22:32 PM

he is being paid for a job, not minum wage like a waitress.

8/20/2014 4:13:44 PM

Yes I give my farrier a Thank You tip every Thanksgiving. He is priceless.

8/20/2014 3:45:49 PM

I tip randomly and during holidays.

8/20/2014 3:15:01 PM

I have a very good farrier and he is well paid, but, I DO NOT, feel it is appropriate to tip them.

8/20/2014 3:10:42 PM

never heard of it!

8/20/2014 2:30:46 PM

No-To be honest, never heard of doing it-having gotten him Christmas/ home warming/ baby gifts

8/20/2014 2:15:26 PM

My farrier sets his rates and that's what I pay.

8/20/2014 2:15:14 PM

He shoes or trims about 50 horses at our place, not having to drive around is his tip

8/20/2014 2:15:08 PM

I pay him for his service...no tip.

8/20/2014 1:37:00 PM

Tip for X-mas. Tip for extra work like my old horse that has hard time standing and needs more time.

8/20/2014 1:16:36 PM

$100 a horse x 3 is pretty hefty shoeing cost already.

8/20/2014 1:14:44 PM

no I pay him for the job he does and as he comes on a regular basis he is happy with what he is paid

8/20/2014 12:01:57 PM

He is good, but charges appropriately on the high side for his service.

8/20/2014 11:41:16 AM

in the uk it costs about £70 to shoe a horse. thats a lot of money in the first place.

8/20/2014 11:08:54 AM

Never heard of anyone tipping their farrier. My farrier gets paid very well for his job.

8/20/2014 11:07:03 AM

I pay $100 every 4-6 weeks, so no tip needed in my mind. No one else around here tips either.

8/20/2014 11:03:23 AM

Tried to, they ALWAYS refuse!

8/20/2014 10:55:18 AM

she is always available, competent, patient & only charges $45

8/20/2014 10:32:13 AM

I tip him because of his travel time to our barn.

8/20/2014 10:25:41 AM

I do holidays, unexpected rush visits and if my horse were to act badly

8/20/2014 10:25:29 AM

He has a fee and that is what I pay. What most farriers charge is more than enough.

8/20/2014 10:23:16 AM

and pay in cash

8/20/2014 10:04:37 AM

No, though I do train my horses so they don't act up during trimming. Not every job requires a tip.

8/20/2014 9:57:11 AM

a good reliable farrier is hard to find, you want them to stay that way

8/20/2014 9:56:34 AM

My farrier is expensive as it is, 240 for a trim and new shoes, can't afford to pay more!

8/20/2014 9:30:18 AM

I have never heard of anyone tipping their farrier. Is it common?

8/20/2014 9:24:03 AM

We have a lot of horses and he keeps prices reasonable, so he gets tipped!

8/20/2014 9:03:44 AM

My "tip" for my farrier is to have my horses ready; in the barn, feet cleaned and comfortable.

8/20/2014 8:30:54 AM

i trim my own horse

8/20/2014 7:42:29 AM

Good idea but I have never thought of it befor.

8/20/2014 7:27:30 AM

Fee is adequate compensation.

8/20/2014 7:16:32 AM

I didn't realize this would be appropriate

8/20/2014 7:00:45 AM

My farrier is fantastic. I can't imagine not tipping her.

8/20/2014 6:53:22 AM

My Farrier is excellent and he is qualified. He charges appropriately and I pay for what I get.....

8/20/2014 4:23:09 AM

Give a Christmas gift and Birthday gift.

8/20/2014 4:06:27 AM

in the uk they charge enough as it is.

8/20/2014 3:17:25 AM

he's there to do a job I pay him for.

8/20/2014 12:42:45 AM

..but we took him boar hunting....

8/19/2014 11:48:36 PM

Tips are for those making less than minimum hourly wage.

8/19/2014 11:42:18 PM

They charge enough as it is! No way!

8/19/2014 11:14:24 PM

I already pay a hefty price.

8/19/2014 10:31:48 PM

makes more $ than me by far !

8/19/2014 9:58:10 PM

My Farrier sets his prices, and the prices are high enough without expecting a tip too.

8/19/2014 9:43:30 PM

My horses are trained and stand quietly. My farrier works for himself, so he sets his price.

8/19/2014 9:41:19 PM

Why???

8/19/2014 9:38:10 PM

Farrier business is tough on the farrier's body however on the other hand they make exceptional mone

8/19/2014 9:10:03 PM

Just like I don't tipthevet or my dntist or my doctor.

8/19/2014 8:42:37 PM

If one of my horses causes him problems, he charges me accordingly.

8/19/2014 8:26:39 PM

my farrier (19 yrs service)receive $ for xmas & birthday

8/19/2014 8:16:01 PM

I did not know it was expected!

8/19/2014 8:10:09 PM

I usually feed him if he's working during lunch

8/19/2014 8:01:42 PM

A good farrier is always worth a tip, it is a service and I believe in tipping

8/19/2014 7:49:49 PM

I "pay-up" so he doesn't have to give me change, and of course, at Christmas

8/19/2014 7:31:55 PM

My farrier deserves it and is very grateful because very few other clients do.

8/19/2014 7:14:38 PM

He is paid a fair rate per horse and gets free lunch and beverages.

8/19/2014 6:59:03 PM

Mine gets a Christmas "gift" and some additional cash if my horse is really bad

8/19/2014 6:48:38 PM

Tipped farrier until 1 just left me high & dry. Always paid him.

8/19/2014 6:37:50 PM

But I do pay her extra for mileage, I want to be sure she is fully compensated for her service!

8/19/2014 6:28:39 PM

he's there doing his JOB he gets plenty

8/19/2014 6:20:29 PM

Since he owns his business 100% of the money goes to him anyway.

8/19/2014 6:10:37 PM

Not a custom in my area and besides he charges enough!

8/19/2014 5:49:04 PM

Our farrier was super expensive and didn't do a great job, had to use him through lease agreement

8/19/2014 5:25:50 PM

Ex-farrier here. Much prefer responsible owner with with well trained horse.

8/19/2014 5:20:57 PM

No, but it's not for lack of trying. He's one of those old men who won't accept the tip

8/19/2014 4:59:12 PM

my husband is my farrier and has been for almost 40 years

8/19/2014 4:58:03 PM

My farrier, his wife, my husband and I are friends, and we give each other Christmas gifts, etc.

8/19/2014 4:55:38 PM

don't believe my farrier would take a tip anyways.

8/19/2014 4:52:55 PM

never thougt of it

8/19/2014 4:49:29 PM

I am a professional farrier and as such, do not expect or want tips;but I charge professional rates

8/19/2014 4:46:10 PM

Never considered tipping.

8/19/2014 4:43:29 PM

IT'S THEIR JOB! No one ever gave me a tip thru 3 service businesses my husband and I owned.

8/19/2014 4:32:12 PM

I make sure the horses in my care are well mannered and my farrier has a proper place to work.

8/19/2014 4:28:06 PM

Never read about it or heard it discussed among friends. 3 easy trims and consider him a friend.

8/19/2014 4:27:48 PM

I am a farrier and since I set my prices, I don't expect tips.

8/19/2014 4:20:45 PM

He is an independent contractor, so he gets all the $ himself...

8/19/2014 4:14:21 PM

He owns the business.

8/19/2014 4:13:37 PM

Tipping is not appropriate. She is paid very well foir her services so the fee is the fee

8/19/2014 3:52:54 PM

I tip hairdressers/waiters so why not the man who keeps my boys moving well! I LOVE my farrier!!

8/19/2014 3:22:54 PM

They are professionals paid for a service, we don't tip vets or doctors, so why farriers?

8/19/2014 3:05:12 PM

I do my own trimming

8/19/2014 2:14:34 PM

I also have Cold or Hot drinks depending on the weather & a sweet treat as well.

8/19/2014 1:38:42 PM

I haven't tipped, but would be willing to pay more if he wanted me to.

8/19/2014 1:27:08 PM

it never has occurred to me

8/19/2014 12:46:52 PM

Farriers are like hair stylists.

8/19/2014 12:27:28 PM

do not think appropriate

8/19/2014 12:08:06 PM

He is well paid - and gets a nice Christmas bonus.

8/19/2014 11:34:42 AM

he charges $75.00 per trim and my horse's behavior is perfect

8/19/2014 10:45:47 AM

It costs me enough just to have 4 shoes and a trim every 5 weeks!

8/19/2014 9:51:23 AM

He makes plenty with the regular fee.
