I think they require additional oversight for the animal's welfare. Some are in horrible shape!

They give city folks a chance to see and pet a horse but they must be regulated for the horse
2/15/2010 1:19:22 PM
It is impossible to monitor, so they should be banned.
2/15/2010 11:22:46 AM
too dangerous, more oversigbht required if continue
2/15/2010 10:20:37 AM
belive cities should make it safer if they want carriages
2/14/2010 11:47:39 PM
I think city people should be educated as to 'nice manners'/ expected behavior towards horses.
2/14/2010 6:58:02 PM
If handled well, more city folks'll get to meet horses.
2/14/2010 1:20:19 PM
horses do not deserve to slave in an unnatural, harsh environment
2/14/2010 11:44:45 AM
Perhaps they're ok in large park venues, but not on the city streets.
2/14/2010 2:27:58 AM
horses are work animals not barbie dolls.
2/13/2010 11:48:28 AM
Hazardous for passengers and vehicular traffic, and these horses live in terrible conditions
2/13/2010 6:44:25 AM
carriage horses look very good to me, have them Vet checked regular
2/12/2010 11:21:28 PM

I drive a wagon and see the need for more intervention
2/12/2010 1:11:03 AM
I drive carriage horses and have always had a very positive response from people about them.
2/11/2010 11:18:22 PM
It depends on the situation It's not a one size fits all thing
2/11/2010 10:16:02 PM
I'e seen carriage horses in terrible working/living conditions. They don't belong on city streets.
2/11/2010 10:14:19 PM
all horses deserve a safe barn to live in and some paddock time outside
2/11/2010 8:10:04 PM
Ask the Amish how all that works for them...
2/11/2010 6:10:05 PM
How healthy is it for the horse--physically and emotionally?
2/11/2010 6:04:40 PM
Motorized vehicle drivers cause the problem. They are inconsiderate, impatient, rude and careless.
2/11/2010 6:02:15 PM
Hideous life for a horse
2/11/2010 6:01:03 PM
Most horses are not well cared for and work attrocious conditions
2/11/2010 5:22:40 PM
leave the industry alone! if the horse can't work, they don't make $ so horse is taken care of
2/11/2010 5:09:41 PM
I feel they should be taken out of NYC but its nice to have them in small town areas.
2/11/2010 4:15:48 PM
As long as the horseman/woman is smart about their surroundings.
2/11/2010 2:43:41 PM
as long as they are treated fairly and well cared for, it should be ok
2/11/2010 2:36:56 PM
I've visited the hack line, the horses are well-cared for and mellow.
2/11/2010 2:20:48 PM
As long as the horse is properly trained & equip safe, why not?
2/11/2010 12:45:00 PM
next thing you know, they will try to ban horseback riding on public roads
2/11/2010 12:29:24 PM
I think the laws in our state mandate good care for these horses.
2/11/2010 12:09:10 PM
Some people are not good enough to handle horses.
2/11/2010 12:01:40 PM
The carriage horses are not abused. There are many regulations on hours, shifts, etc.
2/11/2010 11:27:20 AM
Horses should receive the best care and given proper rest times
2/11/2010 10:35:14 AM
Horses bring such joy to NYC people. Horses have and can live in an urban environment.
2/11/2010 10:23:45 AM
Most I have seen are underweight!
2/11/2010 10:10:40 AM
how about they are awesome.
2/11/2010 2:22:25 AM
Auto drivers are uneducated about safety.
2/11/2010 1:29:21 AM
More equines being driven from view. What next???
2/11/2010 12:35:41 AM
Horses= Business They do need regulations for safety of animals and people.
2/10/2010 9:10:09 PM
i dont approve of them.but perhaps if they were liscensed and approved, it would be better.
2/10/2010 8:57:05 PM
This is a wonderful question. They should really be thinking about bringing carriages back!
2/10/2010 7:48:51 PM
If the horses are properly cared for - I don't see an issue.
2/10/2010 6:15:45 PM
Special care and time away in a pasture for periods of time regularly.
2/10/2010 6:06:40 PM
It's a terrible job for a horse!

i think it looks romantic for the lovers & for sight seeing in urban areas
2/10/2010 5:36:46 PM
As long as taken care of
2/10/2010 5:32:35 PM
For safety, I think there should be some strict guidelines
2/10/2010 4:58:53 PM
no green house gases! :D
2/10/2010 4:50:33 PM
Care and handling needs to be monitored and areas of use restricted, eg parks and surrounding blocks
2/10/2010 3:10:20 PM
Good equine exposure but too many are unhealthy
2/10/2010 1:54:58 PM
Carriages should be restricted to parks and historic districts with limited vehicular traffic
2/10/2010 1:24:49 PM
Dangerious as there's may reckless drivers out there. I wouldn't want to risk my horse.
2/10/2010 12:58:12 PM
What a horrible life those horses must have!
2/10/2010 12:43:55 PM
So much danger to horse and drivers
2/10/2010 10:22:37 AM
I know it is very romantic to see and take carriage rides, but city streets are no place for horses
2/10/2010 10:03:13 AM
Horses built American, clearing trees, trucking product & as war horses.
2/10/2010 9:39:08 AM
Don't know enough about how they are managed to have an educated opinion.
2/10/2010 9:11:44 AM
What political BS is this? The carriages are great, leave them alone!
2/10/2010 8:54:07 AM
Need proper shoes and their own lanes.
2/10/2010 8:26:08 AM
It is inhumane and puts horses at unnecessary risk for harm. They are worked too hard.
2/10/2010 8:25:30 AM
If there are carriages in big urban places there is more chance they will get hit.
2/10/2010 7:13:55 AM
Gives people contact with horses that normally would never have
2/10/2010 1:09:31 AM
auto drivers are mainly the problem from inattention to surroundings

They are a wonderful addition to uban areas
2/9/2010 11:54:40 PM
I love to see them.
2/9/2010 11:08:54 PM
Too bad a few bad ones are all we hear about anymore
2/9/2010 11:08:19 PM

2/9/2010 9:52:33 PM
Carriage companies that are professionally run are an asset to urban areas
2/9/2010 9:52:08 PM
as long as horses are properly cared for carriages are good PR
2/9/2010 9:48:29 PM
Most I've seen in Seattle looked OK, but one was stumbling
2/9/2010 9:32:57 PM
They are hard on feet and dangerous for the horse. Locally we had a horse hit by a car during xmas.
2/9/2010 9:24:23 PM
I love seeing them, but they should be restricted to parks and low traffic areas.
2/9/2010 9:15:03 PM
The next to be watched that the horses are taken care of correctly
2/9/2010 9:14:57 PM
Absolutely love horse or mule driven carriages...a great way to tour or relax!
2/9/2010 8:59:41 PM
They are ok if they are maintained properly..
2/9/2010 8:52:34 PM
Once upon a time, but it's just too dangerous anymore.
2/9/2010 8:52:17 PM
cruel,boring for the horse,pastures?,shade?
2/9/2010 8:26:39 PM
Dirty, noisy, dangerous for horses. Equine welfare should be priority.
2/9/2010 8:23:03 PM
THEY ARE ABUSIVE; THE POOR HORSES DESERVE BETTER
2/9/2010 8:22:26 PM
They have to contend with witless drivers, breathing car & truck exaust and I believe that they woul
2/9/2010 8:10:27 PM
It is the chance to give "city folk" exposure and appreciation ofequine.
2/9/2010 7:54:05 PM
Imagine all of the exhaust they are breathing as they stand behind traffic breathing it all in
2/9/2010 7:49:56 PM
they bring money into the cities
2/9/2010 7:47:39 PM
We should ban autos
2/9/2010 7:47:11 PM
Be careful, if you ban carriages, they'll ban riding horses next.Carriage horses are well cared for.
2/9/2010 7:36:25 PM
Having seen some horses abused i feel tighter control is needed
2/9/2010 7:34:47 PM
I don't think that horses should be subjected to exhaust and traffic and hard pavement.
2/9/2010 7:29:35 PM
i think it would be nerve racking to any one in any street with the fumes, noices and traffic
2/9/2010 7:21:50 PM
only on streets where traffic is not allowed
2/9/2010 6:59:20 PM
I love to ride in them, but worry about the horses welfare.
2/9/2010 6:57:24 PM
They require MUCH additional oversight or need to be banned
2/9/2010 6:52:44 PM
carriage horses are wonderful venues
2/9/2010 6:46:20 PM
It's a lovely tradition, but all the smog and possible health issues can't be good for the hores or
2/9/2010 6:04:44 PM
There should be strict reanimgulations regarding rest periods, days off, feeding and watering.
2/9/2010 5:46:11 PM
great use for otherwise unwanted horses
2/9/2010 5:44:46 PM
horses and vehicles don't mix. Horse loses every time.
2/9/2010 5:39:03 PM
We have urban horses. Most of our riding is in town. They do fine with traffic.
2/9/2010 5:32:36 PM
they should be highly monitored and use appropriate horses
2/9/2010 5:20:19 PM
Not all are bad, but enough of them are to warrent oversight
2/9/2010 5:20:17 PM
Limit length of work period. Limit hours on pavement. Closely monitor condition/health.
2/9/2010 5:13:28 PM
I want a ban, but protect exisiting horses from slaughter after ban.
2/9/2010 5:05:08 PM
I think they are great, if the cars realize they are there and watch out for them.
2/9/2010 5:00:35 PM
Carriages are a wonderful way to tour an historic old part of town or ride through large urban park
2/9/2010 4:51:57 PM
Licensing should depend on regular veterinary inspections.
2/9/2010 4:46:50 PM
Cities are just too crowded now
2/9/2010 4:39:24 PM
They are OK as long as the horses are taken care of properly.

2/9/2010 4:25:27 PM
People act to dangerousely
2/9/2010 4:19:29 PM
I think that many of them are not treated well.
2/9/2010 4:16:45 PM
Horses shouldn't be on the road with cars because of fumes and the danger of getting hit
2/9/2010 4:12:36 PM
They need extra protection and more time off away from the city.
2/9/2010 4:08:12 PM
I have seen some ugly wrecks when a car hit the horse, or he was spooked.
2/9/2010 4:05:21 PM
Give urban people a connection to horses. Make sure the horses treated well.
2/9/2010 4:04:11 PM
Our society today does not have the "room" to do this any more. it no longer is feasible.
2/9/2010 4:01:11 PM
IF THEY ARE USED ON NON MOTORIZED ROADWAYS, IT WOULD BE OK, BUT NOT WHERE CARS AND TRUCKS GO,
2/9/2010 4:00:51 PM

They OK if they treat the animals well. They are a great way to see the sites.
2/9/2010 3:44:51 PM
The health and safety of the horse(s) is paramount. It's a good way for a horse to make a living
2/9/2010 3:43:15 PM
They should have a certain route that cars can give them a wide berth to pass them
2/9/2010 3:41:43 PM
The horses have been very well-cared for in the cities I've visited.
2/9/2010 3:40:53 PM
I love carriage rides in cities!
2/9/2010 3:39:57 PM
the drivers shuold watch out for the carriages.
2/9/2010 3:39:35 PM
be safe about and use low traffic routes. Put up warning signs if possible along routes
2/9/2010 3:39:33 PM
Just as taxis and their drivers require licensing and annual safety checks, so should carriages
2/9/2010 3:39:08 PM
They need to be tightly regulated for the health and safety of horses.
2/9/2010 3:36:32 PM
Only allowed with VERY stringent oversight.
2/9/2010 3:36:20 PM
cruelty
2/9/2010 3:35:13 PM
people have no business subjecting horses feet to endless hours of pounding pavement and gas fumes.
2/9/2010 3:34:36 PM
Exhaust fumes, hard pavement and standing all day in the hot sun not a favorite for horses
2/9/2010 3:34:12 PM
OK, as with any other horse activity as long as horse welfare is considered
2/9/2010 3:33:49 PM
It is so dangerous to have horses alone around heavy traffic, much less HITCHED horses
2/9/2010 3:32:00 PM
If you don't use horses, there won't be any horses.
2/9/2010 3:30:37 PM
They are pretty cool. They do need inspection however. By qualified parties please.
2/9/2010 3:25:17 PM
They should be monitored but NOT by government, animal welfare group.
2/9/2010 3:24:27 PM
As long as they are ethically treated and cared for, I'm all for them having jobs.
2/9/2010 3:22:58 PM
Amish use them as primary transportation in parts of PA
2/9/2010 3:20:01 PM
Just need to be sure the horses are treated humanely.
2/9/2010 3:18:20 PM
Paved roads and heavy traffic are a risky work environment
2/9/2010 3:16:36 PM
I cringe everytime I see a horse at work on concrete
2/9/2010 3:13:50 PM
leave them alone.....
2/9/2010 3:12:33 PM
Every time horses are taken out of the public eye, the entire industry is one step closer to death.
2/9/2010 3:10:06 PM
dangerous for the horses
2/9/2010 3:09:17 PM
hell for the horses, absolute hell.
2/9/2010 3:04:07 PM

2/9/2010 3:03:19 PM
I love to see horse carriages in urban areas
2/9/2010 3:02:59 PM
Carriage horses should wear padded boots, not shoes, to prevent concussion injuries.
2/9/2010 3:01:05 PM
It is extremely cruel and an obvious dangerous environment for a horse.
2/9/2010 2:57:05 PM
Vehicle driver's should give them the same type of respect.
2/9/2010 2:55:13 PM
-have seen them in major cities worldwide; need accurate accident data to access degree of risk
2/9/2010 2:45:10 PM
Sometimes their hooves look awful, but most draft horses I've seen have bad feet!
2/9/2010 2:43:05 PM
As long as it's safe and the horses have proper training
2/9/2010 2:41:42 PM
Allow carriage rides to cointinue. Put a good set of welfare rules in place and enforce them.
2/9/2010 2:37:51 PM
need rules for car drivers whn approaching and passing carriages- be respectful of the horses & peop
2/9/2010 2:37:12 PM

Inspections of carriages for safety
2/9/2010 2:36:41 PM
I think it is a good thing that the horses can work, as long as treated humanely.
2/9/2010 2:31:50 PM
Good for the general public view of horses but need to be moniterd and horses need to have less
2/9/2010 2:25:56 PM
Cities are too heavily congested with traffic. I believe it is too dangerous for both horse & people
2/9/2010 1:23:13 PM
Stables and management techniques should be approved
2/9/2010 1:23:00 PM
People who drive cars/trucks have no respect for those of us who drive our carriages on the road.
2/9/2010 1:03:32 PM
Today, most if not all are well taken care of. There are more regulations reguarding health.
2/9/2010 11:32:03 AM
As long as they are properly taken care of
2/9/2010 10:27:27 AM
i would LOVE to be able to use my horses for transportation in town
2/9/2010 9:58:52 AM
