Horse Owner's Fear: Strangles

Would you know how to manage an outbreak of strangles (caused by Streptococcus equi) in your barn?

I've got a theoretical quarantine plan ready to go
I would have to put a plan together at the time of an outbreak
Honestly, I don't know if I'd recognize the clinical signs of strangles

We had this in our area more than once. I know the signs!

With a 2 horse barn I've got it easy. 100% quarantine of horses, separate clothing/footwear for barn

9/30/2007 5:08:46 PM

Easiest way to manage -- vaccines prior to outbreak!

9/29/2007 10:43:46 PM

I like ur site

Had a horse get bastard strangles from the vaccine, it was aweful.

9/29/2007 11:01:18 AM

Strabgles came through our boarding stable approx. 3 years ago

9/29/2007 10:11:36 AM

Having horses for the last 45 vyrs, I have seen and treated several

9/29/2007 7:36:46 AM

Please inform us, thanks

9/28/2007 9:01:34 PM

I need to learn a little more, and get plans together for a few things!

9/28/2007 8:33:01 PM

We've already been thru Strangles!

9/28/2007 8:13:26 PM

quarantine, and bleach

9/28/2007 7:26:02 PM

recognizing the first case as serious enuf to quarantine all horses is the hard part!

9/28/2007 3:18:21 PM

We have managed to keep Stangles to two of our six horses a few years back.

9/28/2007 2:41:52 PM

I have just gone thru this

9/28/2007 10:29:14 AM

In my 30 plus years in the business I have had to deal with this so I do know what to do.

9/28/2007 8:50:55 AM

I have dealt with Strangles several times in my life. Not fun at all but it all turned out OK.

9/28/2007 1:48:43 AM

I boarded at a stable during a strangles outbreak and know absolutely what I would do

9/27/2007 10:42:11 PM

In the aftermath of the 2003 southern California Cedar Fires our barn had a stangles outbreak.

9/27/2007 10:32:33 PM

All 4 of my horses contracted strangles 7 yrs ago - I'll know how to manage if it happens again.

9/27/2007 10:31:17 PM

I have a carrier on my property and don't expect an outbreak.

9/27/2007 10:21:07 PM

Have had to use plan if handled correctly nothing to fear

9/27/2007 8:06:16 PM

I vaccinate for strangles

9/27/2007 4:50:58 PM

Personally I let them get it from one another if it comes up. Better and longer immunity.

9/27/2007 4:10:18 PM

This happened to us. I knew about Strangles, but I didn't know if it was a bacteria or a virus.

9/27/2007 2:38:02 PM

Strangles spread through our barn like wildfire 2yrs ago, almost killing two horses

9/27/2007 2:36:50 PM

With 2 horses, no reason to worry

9/27/2007 2:12:24 PM

Had strangles - I have meds on hand - also vaccinate annually.

9/27/2007 2:12:00 PM

We just dealt with this in March 2007!

9/27/2007 2:02:42 PM

Had it happen last year

9/27/2007 1:29:24 PM

This is an intresting illness that cought my attention about 6 yrs ago thank you for offering more i

9/27/2007 11:28:55 AM

Prevention & separation, are my first steps...

9/27/2007 11:10:23 AM

Before I started to manage a farm I was a vet. tech.

9/27/2007 10:12:03 AM

Never saw or had to deal with Strangles. And I pray I never will.

9/27/2007 7:55:16 AM

9/27/2007 5:05:54 AM

been there, done that, hope don't have to do again!

9/26/2007 9:40:35 PM

At the first sign of a sick horse quarantine it immediately and call the vet if it has a temperature

9/26/2007 7:02:49 PM

Just went thru it last fall!

9/26/2007 6:27:34 PM

horses are vaccinated, vet lives on farm, have isolation pen(s)

9/26/2007 5:17:48 PM

Just have to run its course. It's in the soil regardless. Best they get it and get over it.

9/26/2007 5:11:13 PM

Our plan isn't just theoretical-we've dealt with strangles brought in by a horse from another state.

9/26/2007 4:46:02 PM

I had a case of strangles and was able to keep the rest of my herd strangles free

9/26/2007 4:12:24 PM

my problem is non-contagious carrier status with outbreak right now!

9/26/2007 4:06:21 PM

As soon as any sign of illness occurs, I vote on the side of safety and quarantine.

9/26/2007 3:52:49 PM

Just bought a weanling w/strangles so 1st hand experience.

9/26/2007 3:41:17 PM

I keep 2 horses at my house.

9/26/2007 3:31:57 PM

yes, vaccine sometimes worse than disease , read up on it

9/26/2007 3:17:35 PM

We also make it mandatory for any horse coming and going a lot to have the strangles vaccine UTD.

9/26/2007 3:12:07 PM

We had a major outbreak at our barn approx. 4 months ago, and both of my horses contracted it.

9/26/2007 12:30:11 PM

We had one case of strangles but our bio-security plan prevented any other outbreaks.

9/26/2007 12:15:29 PM

Quarantine every new horse-successful holding strangles to original case in the 2 cases we have had

9/26/2007 12:09:09 PM

Quarantine every new horse-successful holding strangles to original case in the 2 cases we have had

9/26/2007 12:08:02 PM

We have isolation stalls should any of our horses come down with anything contagious

9/26/2007 11:34:32 AM

We had a bout with strangles 35 years ago, after we bought a horse through a sale barn. never again

9/26/2007 11:34:10 AM

Isolate 1st horse/s, temps 2x day/all horses, cut back heavy exercise, bleach, gloves, etc

9/26/2007 11:29:38 AM

Unfortunately, been there, done that. All worked out fine.

9/26/2007 11:24:51 AM

My mare contracted strangles at a boarding facility so have experience with situation.

9/26/2007 11:13:49 AM

Isolate, quarantine and disinfect EVERYTHING whenever a horse looks suspicious.

9/26/2007 11:11:46 AM

My horses are vaccinated annually and I limit exposure to outside equine

9/26/2007 10:48:34 AM

I successfully contained an outbreak to 2 horses, instead of 10

9/26/2007 10:21:59 AM

Of course, Prevention is much better than having to treat Strangles

9/26/2007 9:39:22 AM

I only have one horse and have handled strangles before in another horse at a different barn.

9/26/2007 9:35:53 AM

One of my horses was almost killed in a strangles outbreak by an unprepared, lax barn owner

9/26/2007 9:34:45 AM

I had a lg horse facility 4 years,specialized in layups. I have treatmt & isolation down to a T!

9/26/2007 9:27:08 AM

Friends barn had it, so yes, I know what to do

9/26/2007 9:20:31 AM

Not theoretical...put them in a secluded paddock for treatment...then limed and reseeded after.

9/26/2007 9:14:13 AM

Been there and have learned how to manage.

9/26/2007 9:12:20 AM

All stalls are full in my barn - nowhere to quaranteen during outbreak

9/26/2007 9:08:16 AM

9/26/2007 9:08:09 AM

having seen in more than once at other barns in our area, good horse people here are prepared

9/26/2007 9:00:54 AM

you need to be diligent about quarantining new or visiting horses and also bleach stalls when showin

9/26/2007 8:46:12 AM

isolate and clorinate

9/26/2007 8:18:44 AM

Have had to deal with it three times now at different barns.

9/26/2007 8:17:07 AM

my plans includes sterilizing everything, tack, grooming tools, trailer, barn, washing hands

9/26/2007 8:13:37 AM

We have a separate barn for new arrivals that would be used for quarantine

9/26/2007 7:23:47 AM

We've trained staff to recognize any change in horses mental and physical health day to day

9/26/2007 7:18:05 AM

We successfully quarantined strangles last summer with a separate run-in shed and paddock.

9/26/2007 7:09:49 AM

I vaccinate EVERY year

9/26/2007 6:54:20 AM

We had this in the early spring. With a good disinfectant from the Vet. & a dumpster for all bedding

9/26/2007 6:15:54 AM

Isolate, treat, vaccinate others

9/26/2007 3:46:54 AM

I have a large syall separate from the barn.

9/26/2007 2:10:35 AM

My vet gives my horses shots for Strangles. I don't want them to get it at a horse event we attend.

9/26/2007 12:36:19 AM

I had it come through once 5 years ago and every horse was exposed out of 47 head. A few got it.

9/26/2007 12:25:44 AM

have no new horses coming in. use my own buckets when away from home so hope to not bring it home.

9/25/2007 11:42:09 PM

Anytime you go to shows, clinics, etc. bleach the stall first before putting your horse in the stall

9/25/2007 11:33:05 PM

I board so I would have no control

9/25/2007 11:15:10 PM

Have empty stall away from main barn/meds on hand

9/25/2007 10:55:32 PM

I don't have any new horses in my herd until after a quarantine period

9/25/2007 10:27:49 PM

Small 1/2 acre quarentine area on our property

9/25/2007 10:03:07 PM

Survey the barnowners-never met one yet who quarantined newcomers!!!

9/25/2007 9:41:52 PM

Benn there, done it and lived to tell about it!

9/25/2007 9:31:58 PM

Been there thanks to a neighbor asking me to board her yearlings.

9/25/2007 9:23:45 PM

Dont have to worry as my horses vaccinated each year aswell as tetnas.

9/25/2007 9:15:40 PM

we had it, lost a foal. at one point had 20 sick. we did isolate several and kept them healthy.

9/25/2007 8:22:47 PM

I managed it once years ago with an outbreak among 50 head.

9/25/2007 8:13:37 PM

9/25/2007 8:01:02 PM

I board one of my horses at a stablel where someone brought in ill horses - many of ours got sick. T

9/25/2007 7:58:11 PM

My plan worked! Isolated five sick foals brought from Alberta. Other horses on farm didn't get sick

9/25/2007 7:46:16 PM

I would recognize strangles even though I have never seen it.

9/25/2007 7:36:45 PM

been there done that

9/25/2007 7:19:21 PM

Afew years ago, our neighbors best friend brought an ifected horse to her property. WHAT A MESS!

9/25/2007 7:19:19 PM

Only 3 horses here. We would quarantine ourselves.

9/25/2007 7:14:19 PM

Just had an outbreak!

9/25/2007 7:01:54 PM

Been there done that, have the t-shirt. Am ready if and when.

9/25/2007 6:58:31 PM

my farm is set back far enough from the road and we have already spoken to clients

9/25/2007 6:45:03 PM

I Have been exposed to a barn with strangles. It was terrible,

9/25/2007 6:05:17 PM

Isolate, create a chemical barrier as possible and intranasal vx for the others

9/25/2007 6:04:57 PM

My first move would be to quarantine the infected horse(s) and close the barn

9/25/2007 6:03:51 PM

a local barn had an outbreak- I am a firm believer in the vaccine!!

9/25/2007 6:00:03 PM

i have my horse vacinated

9/25/2007 5:59:10 PM

had it before

9/25/2007 5:52:28 PM

I isolate new horses for two weeks. Keep outside mares for breeding apart from herd.

9/25/2007 5:45:56 PM

simple - none in and none out

9/25/2007 5:39:41 PM

I have a 6 stall barn for quarantine if needed

9/25/2007 5:02:41 PM

Had strangles outbreak in 04. Did all the right things. All horses recovered & well.

9/25/2007 1:40:03 PM

have already vaccinated but would also isolate, and quarantine

9/25/2007 12:31:53 PM
