FIVE SADDLEBREDS INJECTED WITH DAMAGING SUBSTANCE UNDER TREATMENT

Five American Saddlebreds that were injected with an unknown substance suffered serious injuries as a result. The horses continue to recover at Double D Ranch in Versailles, Ky. Ric Redden, DVM, founder of the International Equine Podiatry Center in Versailles, visited the horses Wednesday, July 2, further assessed their condition, and began treatment with an additional drug (the horses were already on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, and were bandaged). RINGBONE AND SIDEBONE

Ringbone and sidebone, two closely related orthopedic problems of the lower limbs, used to be considered almost inevitable hallmarks of the working harness horse. They are still distressingly common in horses which deal with heavy-duty concussive forces and those with certain conformational problems. There are no miraculous cures for either condition, but it's possible to manage ringbone and sidebone once you understand what you're dealing with. Laminitis or "founder" is a common cause of lameness in horses. The severity of this condition ranges from very mild to life threatening. In severe cases, euthanasia is sometimes indicated to end the chronic pain and suffering of the animal. The good news is that most cases are manageable and respond to treatment.
