84 FLORIDA EEE CASES The number of cases of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Florida has risen to 84. The cases have been found in 30 counties. Only 22 of the horses were alive at the time of reporting the disease, but according to officials, many of the horses probably did not live through the days following diagnosis. Bill Jeter, DVM, diagnostic veterinary manager for Florida's Division of Animal Industry, has said that the mortality rate in Florida EEE outbreaks is about 90%.

SEVEN CASES OF EEE IN SOUTH CAROLINA According to a June 13 Associated Press story in The Post And Courier, a newspaper in Charleston, S.C., Clemson University tests show that Eastern equine encephalitis has killed four horses in Berkley County during the past two weeks.

INTERNAL MEDICINE CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS TIMELY TOPICS The 27th annual American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Forum gave equine veterinarians an opportunity to discuss and share the latest advances in veterinary medicine. Topics ranged from older horse problems to West Nile virus and from cloning to intestinal inflammation. Conference organizers also featured a horse with a unique injury that benefited from the treatment of an internal medicine specialist.

AAEP HEALTH LINK: VITAMIN E & EQUINE MOTOR NEURON DISEASE
Equine motor neuron disease was first reported in 1990 by the late John Cummings, DVM, PhD. It is an acquired neurodegenerative disease of adult horses that is similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) in humans. However, the clinical signs in horses vary according to the form of the disease.
