INDUSTRY MEMBERS DISCUSS IMAGING TECHNOLOGY AT SORING CONFERENCE Animal welfare advocates, breed association representatives, and
veterinarians gathered at the first Sound Horse Conference, held April 11 and 12 at The Ohio State University, to brainstorm ways to eradicate the practice of soring. Some people involved with Tennessee Walking Horses and similar breeds use soring--pain-causing caustic chemicals, chains, trauma, and other techniques--to achieve a high-stepping gait.

ASK FOR FLU VACCINES WITH THE MOST UP-TO-DATE STRAINS
The 2007 equine influenza outbreak in Australia serves as an important reminder of how the disease can cripple the horse industry in a matter of months.
Just because your horse is up-to-date on his vaccinations doesn't mean he's protected against today's influenza strains. Often times new strains of EI emerge, which is why it's so important to ask your veterinarian for Intervet updated equine influenza vaccines, such as Prestige II, Prestige V, and Encevac TC-4. They help protect against the most relevant American and Eurasian flu strains.
Equine influenza is the most economically important respiratory disease in horses. Studies show 66 percent of viral respiratory disease infections are equine influenza. Extremely contagious, with a high infection rate, influenza can sideline a horse for weeks and even months. Ask for flu vaccines from Intervet, updated to protect against today's strains.

CAROLINA HORSEMEN TRYING TO SAVE RARE BREED During centuries of isolation on the Carolina sea islands, the short-legged, sway-backed Marsh Tacky horses became perfectly suited for toiling long hours in the swamps and oppressive humidity.
But their wild looks and workhorse reputation--their name comes from the old English word meaning "common"--didn't exactly make them prized among horse lovers. Today, only about 150 of them remain.

HOUSE PASSES FARM LAW EXTENSION The U.S. House of Representatives passed a one-week extension of current farm law Wednesday, hoping to give Congress more time to finish a multibillion dollar farm bill that is stalled by a dispute over tax breaks.
Negotiations on the roughly $280-billion, five-year bill to expand agriculture and nutrition programs are in disarray with lawmakers from the House and Senate squabbling over how to pay for it.

PUMPING UP UNPRODUCTIVE PASTURES
The Ohio State University Extension educator Rory Lewandowski recently offered a variety of management strategies to help producers ease back into productive forages this spring. Between last year's drought that led to overgrazing of pastures and the late fall and winter rains that kept soils saturated, leading to trampled and muddy pastures, there is a need on many farms to re-seed or renovate at least some pasture paddocks.
