USDA PROPOSING CHANGE TO HORSE SLAUGHTER TRANSPORT REGULATIONS
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is considering a change to its regulations concerning the humane transport of horses being shipped to slaughter. The proposed rule change would extend the protections in place for equids heading to slaughter to those moving within the pipeline, including horses going to an assembly point, feedlot, or stockyard. INTRODUCED LEGISLATION SETS GUIDELINES FOR TRACKING ANIMAL CRUELTY CRIMES
New legislation in the U.S. Senate directs the FBI to include animal cruelty crimes as a separate category in the agency's crime data reporting system. The Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act of 2007 directs the U.S. Attorney General to modify the FBI's crime data reporting systems to list cruelty to animals as a separate offense category. RELOCATION, PURCHASES SAVE BALTIMORE CART PONIES FROM IMPOUNDMENT Just one day before being declared abandoned, 49 ponies formerly used to pull produce carts in the streets of Baltimore, Md., have been relocated--some to new homes in the country, others to temporary facilities within the city. The ponies had been housed in a festival tent in a parking lot at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore since August, when their stables were condemned by City of Baltimore Health Department officials.

NUMBER OF PREMISES REGISTERED FOR ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM INCREASING The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has recorded 429,600 premises registered nationwide--with substantial increases this year in the number of premises registered as part of the National Animal Identification System. This month, Nebraska became the 10th state to register at least 50% of its total estimated production agriculture premises under this system.
