CONTAGIOUS EQUINE METRITIS CASE COULD IMPACT HORSE TRANSPORT
State and federal agriculture officials announced Dec. 16 that a Quarter Horse stallion standing at stud in Kentucky has tested positive for contagious equine metritis (CEM). As the United States is considered free of the highly contagious venereal infection (which can cause infertility and abortions, or can exist and spread subclinically), this raises two major issues: Where did it come from, and will it affect equine transport, either interstate or internationally? Intervet Introduces EquiRab Vaccine
New rabies vaccine designed specifically for the horse
While the incidence of equine rabies is low, the disease is invariably fatal and has considerable public health significance. Additionally, as a general rule, rabies vaccines are highly efficacious and safe. These are all reasons why the American Association of Equine Practitioners has included rabies as a core vaccine in its recently updated vaccination guidelines, meaning rabies vaccination is recommended for every horse, every year, regardless of geography or lifestyle.
The new EquiRab rabies vaccine from Intervet:
- Is proven effective in horses and foals age 4 months and older
- Provides long-lasting 14-month duration of immunity
- Is proven safe--97.7% reaction-free
- Is proven convenient--just one dose for primary immunization
If you haven't already, now is the time to vaccinate. Ask your veterinarian for new long-lasting, safe, and convenient EquiRab, because the benefit is substantial and the risk is too great.
