AUTHORITIES SEIZE 74 HORSES FROM MARYLAND FARM
Animal control authorities said Sunday they have seized an estimated 74 horses and a 35-acre farm in Sharpsburg, Md., where poor care led to death, illness and malnourishment. Windrinker Farm owner Barbara P. Reinken, 61, denied mistreating the horses but conceded she had more than she could handle. MORE...

EXERCISE STUDY REVEALS ANATOMICAL POTENTIAL FOR FETLOCK INJURY Previous studies have shown that bones develop to suit the purpose routinely required of them; therefore, would young horses in regular work from the time they are foals have stronger musculoskeletal tissues then those left to mature in pasture?

Demonstrated Science: Stimulates immune response, which is useful in reducing severity and duration of viral disease. 1
Demonstrated Safety: None of the Zylexis treated horses had visible or palpable reactions at the injection site or systemic reactions. 2

SYNTHETIC SURFACES: SPANNING THE GLOBE It's difficult to get away from talk of synthetic surfaces, whether it concerns racing in North America, Asia, Europe, or Dubai.
At this year's Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs Nov. 4, a prominent European horseman said surfaces such as Polytrack would provide a "level playing field" for horses from around the globe, making the races truer world championships in which horses are not eliminated because they are racing on a surface new to them.

SEASONAL TYING-UP: TOXINS OR DEFICIENCY? In Minnesota, cases of pasture myopathy associated with severe non-exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis (also know as tying-up) are often attributed to the toxins found in white snakeroot. AAEP ASK THE VET: CLEANING WATER BUCKETS
Q. I'm concerned about keeping our horse's water buckets clean. In summer and winter (heated buckets) there is always scum on the inside. So far, I have spritzed them every day with a weak bleach solution followed by a spritz of club soda with separate sponges. My friend commented that I might not be getting all the bleach out; however, I do rinse with plain water as the last step. Any comments or alternatives?

RECOMMENDED READING: EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION
Driving with a trailer full of horses is an ordinary, everyday task for most horse people. The task can become more difficult, stressful, and sometimes dangerous in an emergency situation. You should be prepared to ship a horse if it is in need of emergency care at a veterinary hospital. If you have your own trailer, make sure that it is in working order at all times (the truck, too) and always have a back-up plan. Be prepared to make the trip at a moment's notice. Get the safety equipment for the vehicle and trailer in order well in advance. Such equipment includes spare tires and jacks for both.
