SCIENTISTS TEST CHIMERA VACCINE A new research model has been developed and successfully used to test a new type of vaccine against West Nile virus (WNV). Maureen Long, DVM, PhD, Dipl. DON'T BE A NEEDLESS VICTIM. BE PREPARED WITH EQUIMAX!
More than 50% of horses sampled in the U.S. have been infected with tapeworms*, which can cause life-threatening incidents of colic that are not detected until it is too late. Don't take chances. Use Equimax. It's the only combination dewormer approved by the FDA to safely and effectively treat foals (four weeks and older), pregnant and lactating mares, and breeding stallions, all in a single dose. No wonder Equimax has become the global standard of care.

AAEP ASK THE VET: HIND END LAMENESS
Q. I have a 4-year-old hunter who has become lame in his hind end. He routinely goes over 2' 6" jumps, but never anything larger. Being only 5'3", I do not think that my problem is the weight I am asking him to carry. There are no obvious problems with his hind end that I can see. What types of tests can I expect to be performed on him to determine his lameness?

AAEP HEALTH LINK: GAINING WEIGHT
Our 3-year-old Miniature mare has recently developed a very cresty neck and seems to be putting on excessive weight even though she is getting nothing more than 3/4 can of grain daily and no hay. She is currently on grass pasture, but the grass has already started to lose its nutritional value after a light frost. She was bred three months ago. Is she a candidate for laminitis? We have heard that a cresty neck is a good sign of this. Click here for the answer.

BOOK EXCERPT: BEING PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES
Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from Understanding Equine First Aid by Michael A. Ball, DVM. This book is available from www.ExclusivelyEquine.com.
The best way to prepare for emergencies is to try to prevent them. Perhaps the best approach to first aid is to minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, and disease. Sometimes we do foolish things with, and to, our horses. It's a wonder they don't have more disasters.
