HORSE SLAUGHTER BILLS INTRODUCED IN HOUSE, SENATE Legislators introduced horse slaughter prevention bills simultaneously today (Jan. 17) in both the House and Senate in an effort to increase public awareness. Last year a similar bill was passed in the House with a 263 to 146 vote, but the Senate adjourned before members were able to vote on the bill.

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!
Something about cherry blossoms blooming in January had many of us looking over our shoulders and wondering when winter would arrive. Although much of the country has been experiencing a mild winter, some parts are snowbound, and a nationwide cold snap has descended this week, meaning that horses and owners are bracing themselves for some more seasonal weather.
Horses in colder areas of the country need some special preparation to get them on the right hoof to come out of winter in as good a shape as they were in the fall.

INTRODUCING ZYLEXIS, AN INACTIVATED (KILLED) PARAPOX OVIS VIRUS IMMUNOMODULATOR.
Demonstrated Efficacy: Aids in the reduction of upper respiratory disease caused by EHV-1 & -4, which are thought to latently infect 80% of horses.
Demonstrated Science: Stimulates immune response, which is useful in reducing severity and duration of viral disease. 1
Demonstrated Safety: None of the Zylexis treated horses had visible or palpable reactions at the injection site or systemic reactions. 2
Demonstrated clinical reduction of nasal discharge following co-mingling challenge with EHV-1 and/or -4. 3
EHV can be easily triggered by common stressors to horses (e.g., trailering, competition, breeding, and environmental changes).

BARBARO HAS "IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY" AFTER LATEST SURGERY
Barbaro "is doing much better, but he has a long way to go," Dean Richardson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, said of the Kentucky Derby winner on Jan. 15. The horse had been dealt a serious setback in his effort to recover from a broken right rear leg and subsequent laminitis in his left rear hoof. "He is eating well and we have not had him in his sling for the last 24 hours."

DUMMY FOALS
Q. My mare suffered a dystocia (difficult birth) and the foal had to be taken to a local veterinary hospital for care. The veterinarian termed him a "dummy" foal, but said his chances of being a normal adult were very good. What can you tell me about a "dummy" foal?

AAEP HEALTH LINK: EPM
Q. A boarding facility across the street has a horse with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). This horse was loose about three to four months ago and was on my property. I did notice feces from this horse and moved most of it to my manure pile. I do not know how long this horse was loose, so I am not sure if I got all of the manure. Should I be alarmed? If so, what should I be doing now? I have two other mares that are to foal in March and a 6-month-old filly.
A. For veterinarian Dr. Laurie Shelton's response, visit the AAEP's Veterinary Rounds Q&A Web page from December 2006.

CURRENT TREATMENTS FOR EPM Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is one of the most common treatable neurological diseases of American horses. In parts of the United States virtually all horses are exposed, with a small proportion (< 0.5%) exhibiting neurological symptoms. Because S. neurona can locate anywhere in the brain and spinal cord, the disease can mimic any neurological condition, and diagnosis can be challenging.

MATCHMAKING: ADOPTABLE HORSE
Jesse is an equine hero. This 26-year-old, 14.2-hand Arabian gelding has spent the past eight years as a therapeutic riding horse at the Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center (PPTRC) in Elbert, Colo. The PPTRC seeks a home for Jesse to enjoy retirement, which can include light riding for a young rider. Jesse is sound, well-mannered, and terrific with children who haven't had much horse experience.
Please call Corrine or Kathy at the PPTRC (719/495-3908) or visit the PPTRC Web site (www.pptrc.org) for more information about Jesse, including several additional pictures.

COLIC IS UNDER ATTACK AT NC STATE Would you take ibuprofen for a stomachache? Your doctor likely wouldn't recommend it; heartburn, stomach cramps, and nausea are known "common side effects." But dosing with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen--phenylbutazone (Bute) or flunixin meglumine (Banamine)--is exactly what we do with colicking horses. Add that to the recently recognized fact that Banamine slows down repair of the equine gut, and treating colic with NSAIDs doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
