HIGH HAY COSTS INCREASE HORSE ABANDONMENT

High prices and scarce supply for hay this season are leading to abandoned horses, according to animal welfare groups. "This is the first year where people are literally just opening the gate and kicking them (the horses) out," said Chuck Fisher, ranch manager at Equine Outreach in Bend, Ore., which rescues and rehabilitates horses and puts them up for adoption. Over 9% of foals were reported to have sustained wounds or trauma. Digestive issues other than colic (such as diarrhea) were the second most common, with 6.3% of foals affected, while neurologic problems were third most common, with 5.7% of foals affected. INTRODUCING ZYLEXIS™ AN INACTIVATED (KILLED) PARAPOX OVIS VIRUS IMMUNOMODULATOR.

Demonstrated Efficacy: Aids in the reduction of upper respiratory disease caused by EHV-1 & -4, which are thought to latently infect 80% of horses.

Demonstrated Science: Stimulates immune response, which is useful in reducing severity and duration of viral disease. 1

Demonstrated Safety: None of the Zylexis treated horses had visible or palpable reactions at the injection site or systemic reactions. 2

Demonstrated clinical reduction of nasal discharge following co-mingling challenge with EHV-1 and/or -4. 3

EHV can be easily triggered by common stressors to horses (e.g., trailering, competition, breeding, and environmental changes).

    EQUINE SPORTS MASSAGE 101

Your horse is yawning profusely, licking, chewing, and gradually lowering her head. Her eyes slowly glaze over as her lower lip becomes slack. Is this the effect of drugs? No, this apparent sedation is the effect of skilled bodywork. It's a result of the relaxation response induced by nothing more invasive than the human hand. MORE...

    VIGILANCE KEY IN MANAGING PHF

Potomac horse fever (PHF) probably has been endemic in the Western Hemisphere as long as horses have inhabited the region--perhaps even since the prehistoric era--and it's here to stay. As awareness of the disease increases, so does the need to remain vigilant in managing horses to reduce the incidence and severity of cases. MORE...

FDA WARNS HORSE OWNERS AND VETERINARIANS ABOUT DEATHS DUE TO UNAPPROVED CLENBUTEROL

The FDA has become aware of the deaths of several horses in Louisiana associated with the use of a product labeled as "Clenbuterol HCL." Horse owners and veterinarians should be aware that there are no generic clenbuterol-containing products approved for animals. There is one clenbuterol-containing product approved as safe and effective for use in horses, and its trade name is Ventipulmin. MORE...

ORTHOPEDIC RESEARCH AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

"We have all these new treatment options for lameness in the horse, but with no controlled studies to indicate whether their utilization is warranted or even effective," laments Rich Redding, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS, associate professor of equine surgery at North Carolina State University. And he's certainly not alone in wishing for more research on equine veterinary medical therapies. MORE...

AAEP ASK THE VET: CONFUSION ON SUBSTITUTE DRUGS

    Q. Until approximately two years ago, I had my retired Quarter Horse on both Legend (hyaluronate sodium) and Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). A change in our choice of vets convinced me that her "generic" MAP-5 and Chondroprotect were just as good and cheaper. Can you address this? Also, is it necessary to give both the Legend and Adequan injections, or is there any research showing that just one of these will work well enough alone?

AAEP HEALTH LINK: PURCHASING A HORSE WITH NAVICULAR DISEASE

I am a beginning dressage rider and have started thinking of purchasing my first horse. A 12-year-old gelding at my barn has recently been offered for sale, however, he has navicular disease. My instructor told me the horse is perfectly sound with proper shoeing, and I have watched the horse at several shows and he does not appear to have any impediments. Naturally, he is being offered at a very reduced price. Is it lunacy to consider a horse with such a condition, or is it possible for a horse with navicular to proceed with his career unhindered?

The role of the broodmare on any farm is to produce a live, healthy foal and thereby pass her genes on to a new generation of horses. All of an owner's hopes and management efforts culminate in that hour when the mare begins to labor to deliver her foal, and success is measured in the foal's first breaths and unsteady steps.
