PIGEON FEVER IN COLORADO AND WYOMING

There has been an excessive amount of pigeon fever cases detected in Colorado and Wyoming, according to recent reports from Colorado State University (CSU) and the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab. Seventy-six cases from one region in Colorado have been confirmed by the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory since early fall, more than six times the number of cases from last year's total of 12 confirmed cases. There have been up to 110 cases of pigeon fever reported in one area of Wyoming. MORE...

Vet Tip of the Month BAYER VET TIP: CARE OF THE PREGNANT MARE

We often think of pregnancy as a delicate and fragile condition. When it comes to horses, this perception is perhaps due to the mare's relatively poor reproductive performance in comparison to other domestic animals. However, in a natural setting, the mare does comparatively well reproductively. Proper nutrition, deworming, exercise, and vaccinations will help ensure a healthy pregnancy, and you can look forward to the birth of your foal with greater confidence.

AAEP ASK THE VET: PELVIC FRACTURES

Q. My horse was sound when he was turned out one night, and the next morning he was lame in the hind end. It took quite a few diagnostics by my veterinarian before it was determined that he had suffered a slight pelvic fracture. How common is this and what is his prognosis?

A: Read the answer here.

KENTUCKY SEEKS ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY

No one in Kentucky knows exactly how many horses or farms make up what is now the state's number one agricultural industry, but the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA), in partnership with some of the state's equine leaders, hopes to change that. At a recent KDA-sponsored equine summit, participants took the first steps toward commissioning an economic impact study to collect statistics that could quantify the scope of the horse industry. COOLED SEMEN FERTILITY FACTORS

With the use of cooled, shipped semen on the rise, breeders want to maximize the effects of this new technology as best they can. However, there are a variety of factors that can affect fertility with cooled semen, said Dickson Varner, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACT, professor in equine reproduction in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University, in his presentation at the Bluegrass Equine Reproduction Symposium. The symposium was sponsored by Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Associates veterinary clinic in Lexington, Ky. MORE...

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM OF THE MARE

A veterinarian can perform procedures that help you decide if a mare is suitable for breeding; collectively, these procedures are known as the breeding soundness examination.
