SOME ILLINOIS TRAILER ACCIDENT SURVIVORS MOVED TO NEW HOMES Eight of the horses that survived last month's semitrailer rollover accident in Wadsworth, Ill., have been placed in new homes, and four more are scheduled to be adopted within days, according to Donna Ewing, president of the of the Barrington, Ill.-based Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society, the organization coordinating the horses' adoptions.

We last talked about how to aggravate the horse to load into a trailer. Remember, this isn't beating the horse or getting angry. It's like the horsefly being able to make a 1,000-pound horse move. You merely make it more comfortable to be inside the trailer than outside. All you want to do is take away the horse's options he's used in the past for not getting on the trailer. You also want him to understand the trailer isn't a jail or trap, and you must respect that some horses are genuinely afraid.

A growing number of states allow farmers to compost the carcasses of horses, poultry, and livestock. The agriculture industry says it's a safe and economical way to dispose of dead animals, though some environmentalists question whether it could lead to groundwater and surface water contamination.

RESCUED HORSE GOES FROM FEARFUL TO FIRST PLACE The pony cowered in the corner whenever Colin Mensch walked into her stall.
Beneath her fuzzy winter coat, the filly, called Color of Faith, was about 50 to 100 pounds underweight, the teenager remembered. Her hooves were long and cracked, the result of neglect by her previous owner. She couldn't stand properly, and the strain could damage her tendons.
