FIELD AND STREAM ADVOCATES DONKEY BBQ Field and Stream columnist Thomas McIntyre is free in this country to say what he pleases, but methinks he's gone too far. While he rambles around quite a bit in his column, taking pokes and jabs at all equids and their owners along the way, his final paragraph is something that horse owners should read and ponder.

CALVENZA™ EIV/EHV -- RESPIRATORY VACCINES REDEFINED
Equine influenza virus (EIV) and equine herpesvirus (EHV) are common sources of contagious infectious respiratory diseases in horses.
Veterinarians and horse owners are frequently disappointed in their influenza/rhinopneumonitis vaccines. Calvenza™ EIV/EHV was developed to not only provide safety and purity, but also efficacy and broad spectrum protection.
Calvenza EIV/EHV is the only vaccine approved for use in the U.S. and Canada that incorporates relevant strains of North American and Eurasian subtypes of EIV A2 viruses, and it has proven protection against EIV and EHV. Also, Calvenza EIV/EHV is the only vaccine to offer both intramuscular and intranasal routes of administration.
Ask your veterinarian for Calvenza EIV/EHV or call 1-800-325-9167. |

FOLIC ACID SUPPLEMENTATION Sulphadiazine and pyrimethamine are used in combination to treat equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. These drugs interfere with folic acid (folate) metabolism, a vitamin essential for survival of the causative protozoa Sarcocystis neurona. In human patients, these drugs can cause folate deficiency. Recently, researchers from The Ohio State University published a case report describing a mare with paradoxical folate deficiency.

Unfortunately, horses are perhaps the most sensitive of domesticated animals to botulism, and they can be infected from contaminated feeds and the environment. For more on this deadly disease, read "Beware of Botulism" in the November 2003 issue of The Horse.

MATCHMAKING: ADOPTABLE HORSE OF THE WEEK
Toya is a Tarpan and Kiger Mustang cross filly available from Hooves and Halos Horse Rescue in Redmond, Ore. She is closely related to the horse which modeled for the animations in DreamWorks' film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Toya can be tricky to catch at times, but she behaves very well once she's caught. She isn't ready to be ridden yet and needs a patient and gentle hand.
