ERR ON SIDE OF CAUTION WITH PRESCRIPTION ANTIBIOTICS

Equine veterinarians should prescribe antibiotics conservatively, and horse owners should support this approach, said researchers who studied resistance to antibiotics in 216 horses. Their study showed that a common strain of Escherichia coli can be resistant to commonly prescribed drugs such as sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, and tetracycline, particularly in horses that have been hospitalized. Experts worry that overprescribing these drugs could lead to widespread antimicrobial resistance that would render common treatments ineffective. MORE...

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES FORCE HORSE EVACUATION

Six horses were evacuated Oct. 26 to avoid the flames of a wildfire that engulfed thousands of acres in several Riverside County, Calif., communities. The evacuated horses were pleasure horses stabled on residential properties in the area, according to Peter Lent, emergency services supervisor for the Riverside County Office of Emergency Services. MATZ FULL OF FOND MEMORIES OF BARBARO'S DERBY WIN

Michael Matz is back at Churchill Downs this week, the scene of Barbaro's dominating Kentucky Derby victory. The trainer's working in the same barn area and leading his horse for the Breeders' Cup along the paths where Barbaro walked. One moment, Matz's voice breaks and tears well in his blue eyes as he talks about Barbaro, whose career ended with a devastating misstep in the Preakness. The Derby winner was supposed to be taking on Bernardini in the $5 million Classic on Saturday, with Horse of the Year honors at stake. MORE...

    INTERNAL INSIGHTS

Veterinary internal medicine is a growing specialty that boasts nearly 400 large animal internal medicine specialists, many of them focusing on horses. In a time when humans seek out experts in varying medical fields, it's only logical that we seek the same for our animals.

Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) have been trained, tested, and approved to be veterinary internists. These specialist veterinarians, along with Diplomate candidates, gather annually for the ACVIM Forum, which consists of three days of presentations and discussions devoted to new developments in the veterinary internal medicine field. The 2006 Forum was held in Louisville, Ky., May 31-June 3. Presentations ranged from cutting edge treatments for common ailments and conditions to valuable reviews on rare diseases. Following are highlights from the Forum. MORE...

AAEP ASK THE VET: LAME OR EPM?

    Q. About a year and a half ago, my horse was diagnosed with EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis), which he was treated for, and I haven't seen any signs since. Now he's having hock issues. My veterinarian injected him with pure acid (he didn't use steroids in fear of an EPM relapse). There was excess discolored fluid in all of the joints, and one was very bloody. Because they were so bad, my veterinarian came back six weeks later and injected them again. I'm desperate for a healthy, rideable horse.

RECOMMENDED READING: UNDERSTANDING YOUR HORSE'S BEHAVIOR

There is a new 3-year-old gelding in my barn. He cribs and wears a collar; the collar seems awfully tight to me. A respected friend says that the other horses might pick up this habit from this horse. Is that true? And how can I work with this cribber so he can get rid of the collar?
