HYVISC® CLEARLY THERE IS A DIFFERENCE (hyaluronate sodium)
When joint inflammation or lameness occurs in the horse, the synovial fluid that lubricates and provides a cushioning effect changes. It becomes thin and watery, losing its lubricating effect.
The best method to restore the normal characteristics of synovial fluid and heal inflamed joint tissue in the horse is to inject hyaluronate sodium directly into the joint. It's one of the most important tools the equine veterinarian has to combat lameness in horses. Hyvisc® is a highly viscous, extremely pure injectable formulation of hyaluronate sodium, and has lubricating properties similar to naturally occurring synovial fluid.
Not all hyaluronate sodium products are the same, and some are not FDA-approved as safe for injection into horses. Talk to your veterinarian about Hyvisc and find out why it's the product equine veterinarians depend on. |

EQUINE PLACENTA WORKSHOP You're invited to an equine placenta workshop to be held at the University of Kentucky's Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Dec. 5-6 in Lexington. Significant scientific progress and management techniques have improved pregnancy rates in the mare. However, fetal losses during mid- and late-term pregnancy continue to have a detrimental effect on the final live foal percentage. The role of the equine placenta in the maintenance of pregnancy has received less attention compared to other aspects of equine reproduction, although mare reproductive loss syndrome and other recent events have focused attention on the critical role of the placenta. The goal of the workshop is to improve knowledge of the equine placenta in health and disease and identify areas requiring further investigation.

WEST NILE VIRUS ANTIBODY: USDA-APPROVED TO CONTROL DISEASE
| The options for controlling disease caused by West Nile virus have been limited. That is until now. USDA has issued a conditional license to Novartis Animal Vaccines, Inc. for West Nile Virus Antibody (Equine Origin), the only antibody product approved to aid in the control of this disease. For maximum effect, the product should be administered as soon as the first symptoms show; if you wait until an animal goes down, it may be too late. Check with your veterinarian to make sure there's a supply of West Nile Virus Antibody immediately available. | |

BLOOD TESTING Blood tests are a part of veterinary care known as laboratory medicine. Laboratory medicine is used by your veterinarian--along with physical examination findings--to aid, confirm, or disprove a suspected diagnosis. While the first part of our series on blood tests discussed hematology (the study of blood), this part will discuss the second-most common laboratory analysis performed--the serum chemistry panel. What does that mean, and how can that information help your horse get well? For more information, see "Analyze This!" in the October issue of The Horse.

WELCOME TO THE POLICE HORSE DIARY
This diary will be a new undertaking for TheHorse.com, and we hope you'll share your comments and questions as we guide the educational process of these two weanlings. The goal is to work with a curriculum developed by certified Applied Animal Behaviorist Sue McDonnell, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, with input from Parelli Natural Horse-Man-Ship, to desensitize these weanlings so that by the time they are two years old, they will be easy to train to saddle, and by age three, they'll be ready for an experienced law enforcement officer to take on the street. BREEDING MULES AND DONKEYS Donkeys and mules have played, and continue to play, an important role on the equine stage. Mules in particular are used for everything from pleasure riding and packing to dressage, racing, and jumping. Donkeys are family pets in many instances and, of course, are a necessary ingredient in the production of mules. While there are some similarities between donkeys and horses, there also are some significant differences, particularly in the reproductive department. For more on breeding mules and donkeys, read "Long-Eared Lovin' " in the October 2003 issue of The Horse.
