EQUINE DISEASE DATA NOW AVAILABLE IN ONE PLACE

The USDA's new National Surveillance Unit has established a web site on which the public can see where equine diseases such as equine infectious anemia and vesicular stomatitis have been detected. Before the launch of this web site, finding the disease status of a state might have meant contacting several sources or playing phone tag with a handful of agencies. In addition, each state's health requirements for transported horses are available on the site. MORE...

INTRODUCING ZYLEXIS™ AN INACTIVATED (KILLED) PARAPOX OVIS VIRUS IMMUNOMODULATOR.

Demonstrated Efficacy: Aids in the reduction of upper respiratory disease caused by EHV-1 & -4, which are thought to latently infect 80% of horses.

Demonstrated Science: Stimulates immune response, which is useful in reducing severity and duration of viral disease. 1

Demonstrated Safety: None of the Zylexis treated horses had visible or palpable reactions at the injection site or systemic reactions. 2

Demonstrated clinical reduction of nasal discharge following co-mingling challenge with EHV-1 and/or -4. 3

BARBARO REMAINS AN INSPIRATION ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Led to the gate for the first race of his career, Barbaro shied away, reluctant to get started. A mile later, after an eye-catching 8 1/2-length victory on Oct. 4 at Delaware Park, trainer Michael Matz and owners Gretchen and Roy Jackson realized they might have a special Thoroughbred. MORE...

REARING AND FLIPPING

We have a Quarter Horse mare whose mother was a bad flipper in the starting gate. She has two half-brothers that were also bad in the gate. All of these offspring were trained by different individuals. This spring, she had a filly that tried to flip over backward at 20 minutes of age when we tried to dip her navel. Her first reaction to anything she doesn't want to do is to flip over backward. Due to the life-threatening consequences of this bad habit to both horse and rider, could you please present some possible solutions to this matter?

OVER THE NORTHERN BORDER

While the Canadian horse industry is smaller in total horse numbers when compared to the U.S. horse population, it is no less active. Changes to certain segments of the industry, such as the reduction in the pregnant mare urine (PMU) ranches, have affected horse numbers in certain provinces, however, the industry across the country is thriving. Texas residents hauling horses or other livestock from Wyoming this fall should be aware of regulations affecting the animals' entry or re-entry into Texas, says Bob Hillman, DVM, head of the Texas Animal Health Commission, the state's livestock and poultry health regulatory agency. Vesicular stomatitis, a viral disease that can affect horses, cattle, swine, deer, sheep or goats, has been confirmed in 12 horses and 10 cattle on a total of nine premises in Natrona and Converse Counties in southeast Wyoming. As of late September, these are the only cases confirmed in the United States in 2006. MORE...

QUICK DETECTION OF CONTAGIOUS EQUINE METRITIS

French researchers report they have developed a rapid, effective test for detecting the bacterium that causes the venereal disease contagious equine metritis (CEM). Taylorella equigenitalis is a Gram-negative bacterium that's responsible for CEM, which causes infertility and abortions in mares and infertility in stallions. Contagious equine metritis is considered a foreign animal disease in the United States, but it has afflicted horses here via imported stallions and semen. MORE...

BOOK EXCERPT: FEEDING IN WINTER

Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from Care and Management by author Heather Smith Thomas. This book is available from www.ExclusivelyEquine.com

A horse's nutrient requirements increase with cold weather; he needs more calories to generate heat to keep warm. Mature horses in good condition usually don't need grain, however, if they have good winter pasture or grass hay. A little alfalfa hay can be added during cold weather since digestion of protein creates more heat.
