EVENT CELEBRATES EQUINE VOLUNTEERS AT LAMAR-DIXON

The scene at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center during the past five weeks has been all business. Veterinarians, veterinary students, and volunteers have dutifully cared for the facility's residents--Katrina's equine refugees that were rescued from their flooded or storm-torn homes. But for a few hours on Oct. 9, the pace slowed and a pair of hulking Percherons--one gray and one black--pulled a festive wagon around the property to thank the very people that rescued and cared for them and about 350 other horses. TWO HORSES SHOT IN OREGON; ONE DIES

"It's just the biggest heartbreak you can imagine," said Doris Mataya, owner of Laddie, a 14-month-old registered Paint colt and his pregnant dam, Lady. The two horses were shot multiple times in Mataya's pasture between midnight and 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, according to Sgt. David Marshall of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department. Both horses were taken to Oregon State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Corvallis, Ore. Only Lady survived. MORE...

The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. is one of three locations being considered to host the 2010 World Equestrian Games. The Fdration Equestre Internationale (the governing body for international equestrian sports), will announce the location of the 2010 games when it meets in December. France (Normandy) and the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) are also being considered for the event. However, Dubai is not expected to make a final bid for the games. MORE...

DON'T BE A NEEDLESS VICTIM. BE PREPARED WITH EQUIMAX:

More than 50% of horses sampled in the U.S. have been infected with tapeworms*, which can cause life-threatening incidents of colic that are not detected until it is too late. Don't take chances. Use Equimax. It's the only combination dewormer approved by the FDA to safely and effectively treat foals (four weeks and older), pregnant and lactating mares, and breeding stallions, all in a single dose. No wonder Equimax has become the global standard of care.

VETS WATCH FOR HURRICANE-RELATED ILLNESSES

With water pooling in places that it normally doesn't and sharp debris all around, horse owners can't help but wonder if conditions left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will cause an increase in the reports of illnesses such as tetanus, encephalitis, botulism, and Potomac horse fever. Area veterinarians say they haven't seen an increase of horses exhibiting these diseases, but they're remaining on guard should any hurricane-related cases flare. MORE...

At a dinner Oct. 10 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., Drs. Travis C. McGuire Jr. of Washington State University and C. It has been 10 years since the last induction into the Hall of Fame, which is an indication of the prestigious nature of this honor, stated Dr. Peter Timoney, head of the Gluck Equine Research Center and a member of the Board of Directors of the center's Foundation. AAEP ASK THE VET: PINWORM PROBLEMS

Q. I have a 10-year-old mare being treated for pinworms. She incessantly rubs her tail. She also uses the wall of her stall or anything else available to lean on while defecating. Are these signs related? Could they be behavioral?

A. Click here for the answer.

AAEP HEALTH LINK: SHELTER FOR THE WINTER

My friends just relocated to northern Idaho from southern California. They do not have a barn on their property, just a lean-to for the horses. They were wondering if it would be enough to protect their horse that has never seen snow, let alone lived in blizzard conditions. Should they enclose the lean-to for winter until they build a barn? Should they blanket? To read the answer, click here.

BOOK EXCERPT: WATER BUCKET BLUES

Editor's Note: This is an excerpt from Understanding Your Horse's Behavior by author and equine behavior specialist Sue McDonnell, PhD, Certified AAB. The book is available from www.ExclusivelyEquine.com.

Out of seven horses here, I have five with water bucket issues in stalls, and it's getting on my nerves. Our pony paws at his water bucket and spills out most of the water, no matter how many buckets we leave or how we try to tie them down. Two geldings both defecate into their water buckets, no matter where we put the buckets in the stall or how many buckets are put in the stall. And one of the two driving mares--which are in a big run-in shed together--fills their waterer with hay and eats the hay from the waterer. Any clue what these animals are up to? Click here for the answer.

MATCHMAKING: ADOPTABLE HORSE

Special Prospect is a 3-year-old, 16.2-hand, dark bay Thoroughbred gelding. He suffered a bowed tendon on the track, but will be able to do flat work. He has had tons of ground training and will play all Parelli games. For more information about Special or others at Back In the Saddle Horse Adoption, Inc., in Green Cove Springs, Fla., visit www.bitshorseadopt.org or e-mail info@bitshorseadopt.org.
