Surgeon Baker Joins Hagyard Equine Medical Institute

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, in Lexington, Ky., has announced that William True Baker, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, joined their practice as a surgeon at the Davidson Surgery Center on Jan. 1.

Baker grew up in Woodford County, Ky., in the heart of horse country. His early experience with horses came from both his father, Bill Baker, DVM, a veterinarian at Woodford Equine Hospital in Versailles, Ky., and his stepfather Michael H. Bell, a Thoroughbred trainer at Churchill Downs, in Louisville, Ky. Instilled with the love of horses at an early age he attended Auburn University where he graduated with honors from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006.

After graduation, Baker furthered his education through an internship and surgical residency at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Fla. After concluding his residency in 2010, he joined his father at Woodford Equine. Baker has received his board certification as a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

“The members, associates, and interns here at Hagyard are excited to have Dr. Baker join the practice and are looking forward to working with him. He brings with him knowledge and expertise that will be an asset to our practice,” said Jeff Pumphrey, DVM, a veterinarian and member of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

Baker has published research on conformation and angular limb deformities as well as equine colic. He is pursuing on-going research in the equine acute abdomen and the effects of osteochondral lesions on racing performance. One of his passions is his work at the Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center where he volunteers his expertise to help rehabilitate and retrain retired Thoroughbred racehorses for new careers in dressage, jumping, and three-day eventing.

“I am very excited to be joining such a well-respected hospital and knowledgeable team,” said Baker. “In my short time here, I have been impressed with the expertise of the clinicians and staff and the level of care they provide to their patients. Joining Hagyard Equine Medical Institute will allow me to continue my practice at the highest level. I am honored to have been accepted into the Hagyard family and I look forward to many great years to come. ”

Baker will join the current team of surgeons made up of Robert Hunt, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS; Michael Spirito, DMV; Dwayne Rodgerson, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS; and Laura Werner, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS.
