Miami-Dade, Fla., law enforcement authorities are seeking whoever entered a private property and slaughtered a horse for meat.

According to a Miami-Dade Police Department incident report, the horse’s owner notified police after finding the dismembered animal. According to the report, someone entered the property, located the horse in its stall, led the animal 100 feet away from its barn, and slaughtered it for meat.

The incident is the latest in a string of horse butcherings that began in 2009. Since then, more than 50 horses have been butchered in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. In 2010, Florida lawmakers passed legislation making it illegal to for anyone to slaughter a horse to obtain its meat, and in 2012, the town of Southwest Ranches enacted an ordinance that levies steep fines and penalties on anyone who slaughters a horse for human consumption in that town.

Despite the legislation, Richard Cuoto, of the Florida-based Animal Recovery Mission, said investigations into the horse butcherings have yielded few arrests
