Western CVM to Host 4-H, Pony Clubbers for Educational Day

Members of the University of Saskatchewan's Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) Equine Club will again host young horse enthusiasts during the annual 4-H and Pony Club Educational Day, scheduled for Jan. 26, 2013. The Equine Club is the CVM's chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners.

According to a release on the school's website, sessions will be targeted at different age groups and experience levels.

"Most of the talks and activities tie back to equine medicine and horse health in some way -- but we try to make every session as interesting and as useful as possible for the 4-H and Pony Club members," Maria Fuchs, a third-year veterinary student at the WCVM and program organizer, said in the release. "For example, emphasis is placed on things the kids would actually use such as first aid, the importance of nutrition and how to feed their horses, lameness, and parasites."

According to the release, sessions and topics on the docket include:

  • "Beginner" equestrians will partake in a relay race and interactive sessions on equine nutrition, health, horse markings and colors, horse and rider safety, horse behavior, and horse trivia;
  • "Intermediate" equestrians will learn about first aid, lumps and bumps and lameness, and nutrition; attendees will also participate in three labs covering parasitology, horse trivia, and anatomy; and
  • "Advanced" equestrians will learn about equine anatomy and medicine, equine infectious anemia, rabies, reproduction, and genetic defects; they will also take a tour of the WCVM's Large Animal Clinic and the Ryan/Dubé Equine Performance Centre.

Attendance is limited and interested parties are encouraged to register early. Registration closes Jan. 18. The cost is $20 per member and $10 for chaperones (fee includes lunch). For more information, download copies of the educational day brochure and the registration form. Completed forms and checks can be sent to: WCVM Equine Club, c/o Maria Fuchs, 52 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 5B4. Anyone with questions is asked to contact Fuchs at 306/536-8008.
