Talkin' Horses: Lane's End Staff on Zenyatta Now Archived

When 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta produced a healthy foal by Bernardini, there was a sigh of relief at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky. Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss, the 8-year-old daughter of Street Cry has been a resident at Lane’s End since retiring from the racetrack following her 2010 campaign and her subsequent mating with Bernardini.

Managing such a high profile broodmare is no easy task, and those responsible for the care of Zenyatta discussed the mare’s pregnancy and delivery of the foal during a special edition of’s popular Talkin’ Horses podcast held on March 13. The podcast is now archived and available on demand.

Joining Talkin’ Horses moderator Ron Mitchell and Blood-Horse magazine staff writer Esther Marr were Lane’s End manager Mike Cline, along with Charles Campbell and Donna Vowles, who manage the broodmare operation at the farm and were in charge of Zenyatta during her pregnancy.

The trio of Lane’s End professionals answered questions about Zenyatta’s personality traits, daily schedule, and how she handled being in foal. The podcast also included professional insights into the breeding and foaling process of other mares at Lane’s End, which is home to an elite roster of major racehorses and producers.
