2011 Rutgers Equine Science Update Scheduled for Dec. 8

The Rutgers Equine Science Center will host its 2011 Equine Science Update on Dec. 8, 2011, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The annual event will be held at the Cook Campus Center on the G.H. Cook Campus. The event registration form and directions can be found online.

The Equine Science Update is an opportunity to unite equine professionals, horse owners, farm owners, stable managers, educators, students, 4-H members, and equine enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting the most up-to-date research initiatives and work in advancing horse industry issues and challenges.

Faculty researchers and a supporting team of graduate students are currently working to further the Equine Science Center's mission of "Better Horse Care through Research and Education.

Presentations will include:

  • Highlights of Equine Science Center activity;
  • Metabonomics: the New "omic" Tool;
  • "Shocking" New Research on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation; and
  • "Love Your Horse, Love the Environment"--Keeping it Green.

"Research, education, and of course, horses, are at the core of everything we do and the Equine Science Update provides the perfect occasion to celebrate our accomplishments and share research findings with the actively engaged community we serve," said Karyn Malinowski, PhD, director of the Equine Science Center.

The evening will start with dinner at 6:00 p.m. Optional tours prior to the Equine Science Update include an introduction of the "Horse Heroes" mares beginning at 4:00 p.m. and a demonstration of the Equine Science Center's high-speed equine treadmill in the exercise physiology laboratory at 5:00 p.m. Both tours will be held at the Equine Research Facility (the Red Barn) on College Farm Road in New Brunswick, N.J.

The presentation and optional tours require reservations, which can be made by emailing cody@njaes.rutgers.edu or calling (848) 932-9419. The fee for the Equine Science Update--which includes dinner--is $25 for adults and $10 for students.
