Robin Vess, the Ohio horse trainer found guilty in April on more than 40 counts of second degree misdemeanor animal cruelty for maltreating Arabian horses on her Oak Harbor farm, was sentenced to 90 days in jail during an appearance in Ottawa County Municipal Court last week.

Animal welfare authorities charged Vess with 42 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty in February after discovering 36 animals living in filthy conditions without food or water on her property. One additional horse was found dead; another five were euthanized at the scene. The remaining 31 horses were removed from the farm. Vess later surrendered the surviving animals to the Arabian Rescue Mission/Arabian Rescue Midwest.

On Friday Ottawa County Municipal Court Judge Frederick C. Hany sentenced Vess to the maximum penalty of 90 days in jail. She will serve 42 days in jail, with the remaining jail time suspended. She will remain on probation for five years, cannot own any horses until the court orders otherwise, and she is required to participate in the court's mental health program.

Vess also was ordered to pay $8,711.87 in fines and court costs
